Re: It's Duck Season Somewhere: Argentina 2010 Report

Postby The Waterfowler » Thu Jul 29, 2010 8:27 pm

Was pigeon hunting one afternoon and watched birds working a waterhole with trees and shade so I decided I'd run the cows off and shoot there. I got close, too close actually, and saw they weren't cows and decided to let them keep the waterhole and went elsewhere! Asiatic Water Buffaloes or Gaur to some. The cows worried me more than the bull as they had several calves. 7 1/2's wouldn't have stopped them.

I backed out and never lost eye contact with them and they never moved. I now know what Robert Ruark meant when he said a buffalo looks at you like you owe him money!

Why am I most mesmerized by the thought of shooting some of those pigeons? Thanks for posting the pics.

The Picazuro and Spotwinged Pigeon are great birds. We decoy them on dry land and some of the bag numbers are impressive. One of my favorite birds there.

One good decoying pigeon shoot is usually all it takes to make a believer out of a die-hard duck or dove hunter.

Pat, those horns would have looked great in your studio!

Wow that's pretty cool. Asian Water Buffalo and Gaur are a separate species though. A Gaur is almost 2x the size of a water buffalo, and 1/3 bigger than an African Cape Buffalo. This is a Gaur:

It's a duck-dove-pigeon-perdiz hunt. Pet the pretty cows at your own risk.
