got me a 10 and have a few questions

Postby everette crofford » Wed Nov 24, 2010 5:55 pm

ok i have always wanted one to hunt with. im not here to say its better cause ive never hunted with or around one. i have been pondering on what shot size would be an all around good shot for a 10ga. its a remington sp-10, i have several boxes of 2's, bb, bbb, and t sizes. i thought about making me a grab bag assortment for opening morning. i patterened it this evening and to my suprise they all patterened quiet well. the t shot i am sure is over kill.

$50 says it makes you a worse shot than before, and might even turn you to a skybuster, even if you dispise them

wow, wasnt expecting an answer like that. I do not ever plan on being a skybuster, my 12 was getting the job done well. my hit ratio is probally 1-2 out of three shots on ducks and doves. Im no tom napp and i also dont consider myself a great shot. shot sizes is all i was curious about.

Can't go wrong with #2's. They are deadly on ducks, and geese.

I hunted with a 10 gauge for many years.

The BBs work Fine.

You have so many more pellets with the 10, that you still have a pretty good pattern at 50 yards and PLENTY of killing power.
I usually shot the Modified choke.

Didn't have to run down very many cripples.

God Bless you

Digger had a gun and shells for sale at one time. 10 gauge that is. He is in Derma also.

10 ga for ducks is the equivalent of using a .338 for a bush buck.

We are not talking about shooting puddlers decoying in a rice field...

But on Big open water, when most of your shots are at 50+ yards, the 10gauge is the difference between coming home with ducks or NOT.

Yes, and it does help if you are a BIG man, the 10 will push the little guys around a little bit :D
I quit shooting mine when I got too old to handle the kick.

God Bless you

I like a #2 but I perfer my 12 over my 10,, the 12 is not quite as much a pounding, and I agree with the guy up top you will prob. shoot worse with the 10 than you do with the 12 especially on shot 2 and 3. The sky bustn never bothered me but ya know some folks do let that big shell make them think everything is in range........If you can take the punishment the 10 puts out and shoot it like your shooting your 12 then you may absolutly love it. I CoOp shells and it was just cheaper in the long run for me to stay with the 12 and I never really got the chance to get in tune with the 10 either way I don't regret getting the guy and I hope you end up having great sucess with yours......

Sounds like someone is compensating, I have hunted with both and the 10 never made sense to me. The cost/performance difference is not enough for me to shoot a 10. I will stick to 12 ga with #2. JMHO
Damn, i thought I had that one

Is that buddy of yours tryin to blow that call or make love to it?

Yea I got 1(SP10) and would probley still sell it.I shot #2 for duck's and kept some BB or BBB close by in case some geese came by.I'm a fairly big guy(6'3 225LB) but I never had a problem with recoil or getting back on target for second shot, and I don't sky bust.

They are hard to find but I have always preferred #1's over all the other shot sizes. They have better knock down and less cripples than #2's in my expierence.
