Rice fields
Rice fields
Did anyone have any luck on the rice fields opening weekend? Our group has rice fields this year and weve never hunted them before. Weve got standing stubble, how big of a hole does everyone prefer knocked down and what kind of water depth is ideal? Should we expect these to produce more in the early season or late? Good luck to everyone this year!!!

Re: Rice fields
How tall is your stubble? Your prob going to wish it was rolled. Just like any other place each day is different late or early. I prefer right before or right after a hard freeze. Like wingman said just enough to float a decoy, its easy to have too much. You may want to come up with something to pull behind an atv to lay down the stubble.

Re: Rice fields
Were going to knock down a bunch of it this weekend, hopefully the birds will approve.

Fwiw, they are hammering my uncut rice at night. Gone at daylight. Hopefully this new moon coming soon will change things.

You would be surprised how easy it is to decoy them in at night with a full moon.

Only novices use decoys.

I love the above scenario. Ducks feeding on rice and/or corn all night then coming to the timber/brakes during the day. This is, in my opinion, what ducks are supposed to do.
Are we gonna get wet?

I am a purist. Decoys complete the picture.

Well since your timber ducks are eating my rice, swing by the house and get me on your way to the woods.

Re: Rice fields
Totally agree. They are doing the same at my place. Can hear them all night long out there on the water, then when daylight comes they are nowhere to be found.Wingman wrote:Fwiw, they are hammering my uncut rice at night. Gone at daylight. Hopefully this new moon coming soon will change things.

Re: Rice fields
Anybody got any suggestions on what to hook behind the 4 wheeler to knock down some rice stubble? We ran the 4-wheeler over it for about 45 minutes and knocked down a small hole. We also did not do any good opening weekend in the rice....seems like they were everywhere except the rice fields.

I dont know if something like a sod roller would work, but needs to be similar.

I cut a piece of 2 inch square tubing 12 ft long and welded an eye bolt at eual distance from the ends. Hook a small chain and drag away cleared bout 3 acres in an hour.
Damn, i thought I had that one
