Re: Ask DS dog breed selection
i've never lived a day of my life with out a dog. i've had only a few breeds.
Pointers - not what you what
Minn. Schnauzer - i wouldnt pic this for a compainion
Lab - Great dog all around. but requires lots of attention and eats a ton.
My Favortie dog of all time is a blue heeler. affectionate, yet can kee to them selves. house train easlily, protective, and they will pretty much chase anything you trian them to. they can be great frisbe dogs.
A blue heeler would be just the right size for you dad, and these dogs don't roam, they are home bound dogs. Great breed for a compainon.
We had one that would kill opposums all the time. Someone gave us a baby coon and we showed the coon to babe, and she snapped at the coon, and i popped her. after that the dog and that coon were best buds, they slept and ate out of the same bowl. Dog would still drag up opposums every now and then.

+1000 I have 3 that I raised from puppies. They are the greatest companions ever. They can handle any environment from the Mississippi summers to the Colorado winters. They are super easy to train to whatever you want. Another plus is that they are great with kids(grandkids). I have a 7 month old daughter and many nieces and nephews that the dogs just love.

Well I pulled the trigger on it just a few minutes ago. After talking to chris I decided to get dad the tennessee mountain hybrid. How small of a world is it that the breeder Calvin Boutte worked at one of the depots of the branch I worked for in New Roads,La... The older I get the smaller the world is.
Anyway I will post up pics when I get the fella a few days before christmas, never had a dog from a puppy this should be an experience for us both. Thank all of yall for your inputs and there are several breeds mentioned that I would love to one day own.

Another vote for a min. schnauzer. Most are very healthy. All are very loyal. Ours follows my wife around the house when I am not there guarding her and my infant son. LOVES to ride in the car/truck with his muzzle sticking out the window. Very smart. No shedding. Fast as he11 like someone said. I can sprint across the yard and he will be running sideways and backwards looking at me like I'm slow as molasses. I would venture to bet one would not bark much if your dad raised him from a puppy. I know several people that have one and I have never heard their dogs bark very much. Mine barks a lot at black folks for some reason.cheeko wrote:+ 1 on the mini schnauzer. I have one that is a in and out. Very smart dogs. We keep his hair short. He does not shed. He hates squirrels, rabbits and anything that comes in the yard. He is fast a hell. My wifes uncles little jack russell can not out run him. He will also retreive anything you throw. Great dogsJCA wrote:I'm going to put one out there to you that I haven't seen any one else mention. A mini schnauzer. We got the kids one about a year ago and and he has been a great inside outside dog. Absolutely hates squirrels and can swim like a fish. I promise you that no one will ever come in your yard again that you don't know they are there, little jokers are a 4 legged alarm system.
