My sons first deer

Postby hellfighter » Sun Dec 12, 2010 8:59 pm

Thursday the 9th I took my 5 year old for his first hunt with his own gun. It was late in the afternoon so we just walked in the woods in front of the house and sat on the ground against a tree. 15 minutes into the hunt we had this spike come up on us about 25yds away. He spotted us and started blowing and popping his foot on the ground. When he dropped his head and started rubbing a tree so my son got his gun ready and put a great shot on him. The deer ran about 40yds and my son tracked his blood trail all the way. He has been shooting a crickett 22 cal for a while, and I pulled the old switcharoo on him to the 243. He figured it out as soon as he picked up the gun walking to the woods. He asked me if it was just like the 22 and I told him yes. After we found the deer I asked him if he felt the recoil or if it was loud, and he said he did'nt notice anything. I know this is long and might be boring to some of ya'll, but there is nothing more exciting than your childs first kill. I could'nt have been a prouder father at that moment. ps. He is holding the horns, which were about 2 inches long so you can't see them

These stories are never boring, I got to share the same thing with my son a couple of weeks ago and that ranks as my most successful hunt ever. I commend you for taking your son hunting and you two will surely make alot more memories in the woods. Congrats to you and the little man, that is what its all about.

That is awesome. My 5 YO has stepped up from the Red Ryder to the Gamo with a scop this year. I thought we would do the Cricket this summer and then go to the 7-08 next fall. I was thinking same thing, never let him shoot it till it's time to kill a deer.
One question, i let Davis try a Cricekt yesterday at the gun show and it still eseemed too long for him to put the stock against his shoulder. Is it the same with your boy?

The crickett was just fine for him, but he has arms like a silverback. The 243 is a little longer so I have to help him by holding the forearm
