You're gonna chit yourself when you get your car tag. Mine was $500 and something a year. Taxes are freakin outrageous in the city of Greenwood and Leflore County ain't much better. Better chain up any and everything than can be toted away. I'm so glad that I'm out of that hell hole. Good luck to you though.

Re: Greenwood guys...
I'm used to the high taxes. Ever since Horn Lake annexed us a few years back, our car tags have been higher than giraffe's "BEARDED CLAM". I'm sure it can't be much worse down there. I'm glad you mentioned the theft. I was contemplating bringing my four wheeler down, but I guess that's out of the question unless we got a full garage and not just a carport. We actually thought about your area Don Miller, but after talking about it and how much I like to eat, and she likes to shop, we'd be having to come down to Greenwood a lot anyway so we figured we'd give it a shot and see how it goes until we have kids and they get school age.

Dude why in the world would you get on here and ask for everyones advice, get said advice then do exactly what they ALL told you, you did not want to do??
Why even ask?
Now with that said, IT IS NOT too late look between Grenada and Greenwood. Hell, if you live in one town it doesnt take but 25 min to get to the other, look for something in between. Then you get all the pluses of what you said without some ninja stealing your stuff, robbing you or something bad happening. Really, its just not worth moving a new family into the city of Greenwood.
I am sure the realtor doesnt have a little conflict of intrest when it comes to what the best place to live is.(if they work in Greenwood)

Re: Greenwood guys...
Man, I've gotten PMs from people that live in Greenwood that have told me the exact opposite of what is being said here on the open forum. And these are people that live in the exact same neighborhood that I am looking in. The people that own my company live in the same neighborhood, and have told me the exact things that these people are telling me in PMs. Said they haven't had a problem with crime in over 30 years of living there. Now maybe they're blowing smoke up my ass, maybe they're not. I asked for opinions from people, and I got them and based on what I have been told and seen for myself, we made the decision to live in NE Greenwood. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes or go against what anyone has told me. We are just making the decision based on what we think will be best for us in the long run. We have our list of wants and don't wants and so far that area has provided us with just about everything on our wants list and not a whole lot on the don't wants. The biggest advantage of living in town is having some close neighbors and people that we know for when I am out of town for work, and my fiance is home by her self. That was one of the biggest selling points for us, along with everything that downtown has to offer for her to do during the day while I'm at work. Thank you everyone for your advice and opinions! Both through PM and here on the open forum. They were all really appreciated and between those and what we saw ourselves on Monday, we really look forward to making the move and raising our family there.

Greenwood has a bad reputation, but it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Crime is mostly black on black or white on white with the real one blurring lines being property theft, but honestly if you keep your stuff put up and not an easy target, you wont have problems. The police are actually pretty good about noticing who doesn't belong in a neighborhood and are not afraid to stop them and see what they are up too. My family is pretty closely tied to Pillow Academy as well as my grandfather has started a few things out there. The only criminal act I have had committed against me since my living here was a stolen screwdriver and adjustable wrench from my tool box, the guy actually offered to replace them about two weeks later when I helped him at CVS as he was coming down off crack or something and throwing up all over the parking lot, I gave him a few bottles of water and talked to him for awhile before he told me I had a nice house and he was sorry for stealing from me. I was shocked when he told me what he had done a few weeks ago and that he recognized my truck. I still see him every now and then riding his bike (that he stole my tools to fix) and he always waves. I told him that day, if I ever catch you at my house uninvited, I will kill you and we were both understood on the issue. Greenwood has some improving to do on it, but it is one of the nicer towns in the Delta, and that is not me being biased.
Ransco PM me if you would like, I live in town right now but will be moving back out to the country in a week or two. Maybe when y'all get down here we can go drink a beer or cook a steak.
Re: Greenwood guys...
Thanks for all the kind words guys. Chevy you hit the nail on the head. That is EXACTLY what I've been told by everyone that lives there now about the theft. And the houses we're looking at have either garages or workshops/storage buildings out back, so that really isn't a huge concern for me. Lodi, I'm sorry if I came across as ignoring everyone's advice and opinions. I'm really not the hard headed type. We haven't completely ruled out the possibility of living in the country. We may be looking at a house over towards Winona this weekend that a guy in our office just told me about. I really look forward to moving down there and having a beer and cooking steak with all of you guys. Maybe even shoot a few ducks.
Re: Greenwood guys...
Well guys we finally got moved in yesterday. I'm sure some of y'all saw the uhaul out front after church yesterday afternoon. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you guys and getting to know some folks around town! Y'all stop by and say hey if you're in the neighborhood and see a stranger!

I really like your optimism, but what will your fiance be doing with the rest of her time after the one full day of exploring what downtown Greenwood has to offer? Jus' pokin' a little fun.

One can't totally explore downtown without hanging out at Club Wispers. This is the place where the grown folks play.eSJay wrote:Welcome to the delta by the way.ransco33 wrote: That was one of the biggest selling points for us, along with everything that downtown has to offer for her to do during the day while I'm at work.

The people that are ragging on greenwood must have spent too much time in south greenwood for reasons unbeknownst to me. Just like most cities you have your bad parts. Overall I think greenwood is safe and is probably the best city left in the delta that has a fighting chance.
Re: Greenwood guys...

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! We both grew up in fairly small towns and really look forward to getting back to it after living in two military towns. Back to the life that we're used to living. As far as not having much to do, I'm perfectly fine riding backgrounds and drinking beer on the weekends. Holler at me if anyone wants to join!
