Season starts too early
Not that it matters, but just wondering if anyone else believes our season should start a week or 2 later? Like when the dog woods are blooming

I agree 100% you can ask several people on the board and I have told them the same thing. That being said the birds are still killable but there not hot yet. Used to season started about the 21 and here we are starting the 12 that's 9 days and in the spring time 9 days is a long time when it comes to turkeys. But I agree

Re: Season starts too early
MDWF opens it that early so we can scare the crap out of them. That way, they're ruint by the time it really gets good and we don't kill so many. I do agree that we open about a week too early. I really believe that running them so hard while the woods are so open saves a bunch of them. They get rattled awful quick but the little head takes over and gets them done in like everything else.

In a word yes. They open it up so early to draw the out off state crowd. Go somewhere and pick up anout off state hunting magazine and you will see their adds. "Come to MS and hunt x-thousands of acres of public land. We have the earliest state wide season in the country" .

Re: Season starts too early
I was wondering about that. Our season opens tomorrow and has opened on the 15th of March for at least the past 7 or 8 years when it was moved up from March 20. I thought Mississippi came in after us, but seeing all these dead turkey pics, I guess not.

Yes, I just hate having more opportunities to hunt. It would be much better to just hang around the house and not have to get up so early every morning.medic11 wrote:Not that it matters, but just wondering if anyone else believes our season should start a week or 2 later? I am split on it. I think like hambone in the case that I am glad to have days to hunt. BUT I think alot of harm is done to turkeys this early. Hell, we busted two off the roost this morning and had no idea they were there. If they woud have been hot we'd of known about them.

Yeah I feel like the birds really do nothing but become educated during early season, but I am glad the mdwfp moved the season up so hambone could leave his house

That was good of the MDWFP, for sure. And I like educated turkeys...they are more of a challenge, so the season lasts longer.medic11 wrote:Yeah I feel like the birds really do nothing but become educated during early season, but I am glad the mdwfp moved the season up so hambone could leave his house
