Looking for advice.....

Postby AMoore141 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 2:55 pm

Found out on Thursday that my wife and I are moving to Charleston, SC for 3-5 years for her to complete her residency as a Peidatrician. I have been in MS for 29 years and have always been able to hunt family land any time I wanted. I was just wondering if any of you guys had experience hunting or fishing in that area. I'm not a huge fisherman but I hear the redfishing and spec fishing is great there, so I might have to learn.

Any suggestions of thing to do there outdoors would be greatly appreciated.

Also, will be listing a house for sale in Madison on here probably tomorrow or the next day after I get appraisal finished so be looking for that too, in case any of you are interested of know someone who is.

Thanks,

Other than that, all I know about the hunting is they release their own banded ducks, it still sucks, all of them invade MS and Ark in droves like Albanians. They can deer hunt for like 6 whole months even though they arent as big as the ones here.

On a serious note, Charleston is a very nice, classy, WHITE city. I would love to live there if I had the opportunity. Fishing is supposed to be bad booty. I would probably give up trying to hunt for a few years and chase fish.

There some very good redfishing up there, I went on a trip several years ago up there. There are also alot of sharks off the coast, if you happen to hook into a black tip, cook and eat it thank me later. I have no clue about the hunting.
Damn, i thought I had that one

Is that buddy of yours tryin to blow that call or make love to it?

I've only been to Charleston once but the eating there is outstanding. I'd go back just to try different restaurants. Never fished the area but like others I've heard it's great. The ACE basin holds a lot of waterfowl in the winter. A guy I work with is from that area and he goes back home to hunt 2-3 times/year. They kill a lot of teal, wigeons, pintails, shovelers, & mottled ducks. They don't get mallards very often but do get black ducks from time to time. They mainly hunt puddle ducks but do get the occasional canvasback, bluebill, redhead, or ringneck. Their place was wintering about 20-30,000 teal at one point this past season. I know there are a lot of private plantations in the ACE basin. I'm not sure about any public land or land to lease but talk to enough folks and you can probably find something decent.

It's a fairly young website, but you can post on there asking questions about areas.

Focus on turkeys and fishing and you will be happy. There are also some decent dove hunts if you can wrangle an invite. Definitely take a boat - get a good map and a cooler of beer and just start exploring the creeks (mind the tides). Look for smaller creeks coming into bigger ones and, not to be a jerk, but general areas where other people are catching fish.

I've always heard the quail and dove hunting in SC was awesome! And the lowcountry is known to winter a few ducks too. I'd love to spend some time in Charleston.

I live outside Savannah, which is two hours south of you. Between Savannah and Charleston there is a plantation belt of private, multi-thousand acre estates in an area called the ACE Basin. These were originally developed by industrialists at the turn of the previous century. The hunting and fishing on those dreamlands is incredible if you can wrangle an invite. The best way to get hooked into that group is to join Rotary, Kiwanis, or something like that and try to meet old Charleston money. First Baptist or a First Methodist Church will also have some of the more "genteel" folks. They are the gatekeepers. Be a good boy and volunteer your time and after a few months or a year you can ask the ole' boys how you can get into a duck hunt out there. They will know somebody. If they like you they will help you out. At least, this worked for me.

Get your wife to find out what her patients parents do and their hobbies. Probably a good way to start. Bet there are a lot of hunters in the Medical field in SC like in MS. Your wife may be the easiest way to get in.
