found a 3 ft copperhead in the road yesterday

Postby duck_nutt » Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:12 am

I removed him from the area via a death blow to the head...

took him home to show the kids.(a way of reminding them that the snakes are out and to be looking where they are going)

decided to skin it....was much easier than I thought it would be....but what now?
I prolly did it wrong, but I'd like to know how so next time I do it right...
i covered it in salt, rolled it up tight and put it in the freezer..
when i put the salt on it, I could see it shrinking...
have I ruined it?
what next if I haven't..?

I saw one post where double R 2 said use alcohol and glycerin...didnt' have any of that

the salt aggravates the deep dermal contractile elements and residual muscle fibers and that is why the skin moves. Saw the same thing on a rattler last year.

I'm sure you can google what you need to put on it. Boric acid comes to mind but I'm not sure. You will need to staple it or find some way to stretch it out.
No, i don't want to know you ---- teul

i googled it and there are about 1000 different ways....

just looking for some 'hands-on' experiences...

think i'll tack it to an old piece of barn wood and let my son hang it in his room

ONE DAY, i want to make a bow and cover the limbs with snake skin...

did you take any pics of it before you skinned it? Those things scare the CRAP out of me, but I still like looking at them.... especially when they're dead

no, didn't get a before pic.....it was 3 fter but pretty skinny..I've seen copperheads this long get twice as big around as he was...musta have just come out of hibernation...

I'm gonna get my 'catching pole' out of the shed so I'll be eady next time...

It did what I wanted when it came to the kids..they were very jumpy around it. even with it's head off...and they were fascinated on how long it's heart beat after being skinned.(i was too)..they disected it and tried to see how it works...

No, you haven't ruined it...what you've done is called a good start. Now, get out the matches and gasoline and finish the job.

Guess all the snake lovers are not dropping in on the site right now, I figured there would be at least 20 folks bashing you for killing it.

The leather saddle treatment spray at the local co-op works well.
