Benny, after all your pontificating, you are sounding very hypocritical. Are you telling us all that you "relocate" beavers, rather than killing them, as part of your beaver control practices? I ain't buying it. For the purpose of this discussion, what's the diff between a snake and a beaver? What is worse, killing an animal or reptile for personal safety or other practical reasons, or killing them for money? Isn't that pretty much what you do --kill those beavers for money?

Now, I personally have no problem with you killing beavers, but it seems pretty inconsistent with your positions stated here.

For all wildlife and beaver lovers/relocaters, take notice that my club members intend to blow up some beaver huts and beaver dams during late June or early July to get water off our forest and food plots. Not only will beavers be killed in this process, but there is a good chance that a few snakes will meet their demise as well. Anyone who would like an opportunity to relocate and save these beavers or snakes before the dynamiting commences, please let me know --you've got about two to three weeks to git er dun. I'll provide the GPS coordinates and precise location of the huts and dams.

I think the lesson learned today class is this : there are certain folks on this board who think that they are better than everyone else --that they, and they alone are on a higher plane of consciousness and sportsmanship------because they, and only they, know how to hunt, fish, convene with nature ---and only they know what animals (or snakies) can be ethically killed or not killed ---because they make the rules and the exceptions to the rules ---and only they know what the rules are ---therefore the rest of us poor souls are just mindless idiots for not understanding their genius----for not bowing and worshiping their higher plane of being ---for , in their minds, they are legends ---throwbacks to long lost days of old ---mountain men who can survive for months from a single billy goat or sheep-----modern day Daniel Boones and Davy Crocketts ----waxing eloquent at the marvels of nature, while subtly glorifying their previous outlaw ways with a wink and a nod ---- legends in their own minds ---and very much quite full of $#!+.

So, here's a toast from the admittedly imperfect and full of $#!+ Po Monkey ----I raise my whiskey glass to all those who know more than I, are better sportsmen than me, who have done it all but are now reformed, sanctified and holier than thou, who do no wrong, and judge all but themselves, drink up and taste the warm smooth elixir of hypocrisy. Howl you some blues tonight, or the blues will come down on you hard. Hooowwwllllllll!!!!!!!!! 8)

The "chicken snake" aka "rat snake" is a very good climber and often climbs trees or structures to eat nestling birds (eg wood ducks, chickens, etc) or eggs. It's diet consists mainly of rodents, birds, and bird eggs. (Reference: The Center for Reptile and Amphibian Conservation and Management).

So Benny the Beaver, there does appear to be a practical reason to kill these snakes on one's property ---to protect the birds. For the waterfowler, this could mean protection of the wood ducks nestling in trees or in the wood duck boxes carefully placed for duck production. For the bird watcher, it could mean protection of a nesting robin in the old oak tree in your yard. But, according to your twisted logic, its ok for YOU to kill beavers to save wetlands, but not ok for anyone to kill a chiken snake for any purpose ----say to protect wood ducks, birds, or ....uhh.....chickens (some folks still raise them on those places called family farms).

Man, this is too easy. Next time you want to debate, I'm just gonna have to tie one half of my brain behind my back to make it fair.

Don't forget turkeys. I'll kill every slithering turkey brood killin' "illegitimate child" I come across. Especially during nesting season.

Killing that chicken snake would be personal protection for me. He may not harm me, but I might harm myself, or anyone who happens to be close to me, when I try to get away from it.

Yep, I'm a big ole wuss for being scared of cottonmouthedcoralwaterrattlers, and thats the only thing I see when I see a snake. Or a friggin lizard to. Scared stupid, as some on here would say. Queef, Queef

explain please, why you would kill a beaver because he is doing what he does and what beavers have done since the beginning of time. killing a beaver because hes a beaver is the same as killing a snake because hes a snake. If I understood you reason before Benny it was because they are destroying waterfowl habitat. So you get paid by a landowner to clear beavers because the beavers are flooding crops or because they are destroying someones paid lease or a Man Made waterfowl habitat.

Its been years since I killed a snake but I've wupped the crap out of alot of them thats got to close to Me in the water. I am scared silly about snakes but I quit killing them just because they are snakes long ago...And I will shot a beaver on site but with MY gun not MY rifle. :D

Benny You make some good points sometime. The real lesson here is.....You learned not to go out and just kill somethin,by going out and killin somthin..Right you learned your lesson Right???

These boys might learn the same way.. I know i'm hard headed sometimes and it takes me making some mistakes to learn my lesson. Even if a hundred people have told me not to do it,I learn better by doing it and seeing the reprecusions. That is how i learn. Everyone is diffrent and learn different. Just give advise and don't pounce on them,They will learn alot faster that way.

damn, lotta heat over this one...the pic doesn't bother me one bit....20 years ago, that would have been me....it kinda saddens me sometimes to think back at the stuff I did as a kid..wanna talk about killin? My entertainment of choice was me pellet gun...there's no tellin how many hundreds of birds i killed as a kid..not to mention snakes, rabbits, squirrels ,minnows ,dragon flies, etc...if i ran across it i'd shoot it..(cept cats and dogs) crap i'm lying....I shots a few of them too....but now as an older man, I realize it was wrong...(and no, my parents didn't know me and my friends were killin every bird in town/county)...heck, we even tried eating a few of the birds...robin ain't all that bad..and I too remember my first bird...it was a woodpecker..after i got over the excitement of it dropping out of that tree i cried...but that kill sparked a fire that has burned inside me til this day...It's not the killing I enjoy now...but as a kid it was...hell, i might have been a poster child for todays definition of a psycho/killer...but I grew out of the killin part and focused more on the hunt/stalk part..I LOVE hunting, but don't enjoy the kill anymore...It's a total rush til the moment I pull the trigger..but when the game falls there's a slight sadness....When I was a kid, I'd grab the bird/snake/whatever and boast about killing it..how it was such a great shot and all that hype..the longer/more difficult the shot, the prouder I was..Now it's different..I don't take shots at deer 250 yards away anymore.......You're not a hunter killing deer at 300+ yards..you're s marksman, and there's a difference.... as far as the picture goes of the guys killing the snake...pffffffffft..gimme a break..lighten up...you talk about teaching your kids with your experiences.......THEIR experiences will teach them far more effectively than your's ever will....You know this...tell a kid something is hot and he's gonna have to touch it himself .....they're gonna smoke and drink no matter how much you preach.....You can only hope that all the talking you've done will have an impact on them...and hopefully they will learn from THEIR EXPERIENCES, as I did..
