New Zealand, get those decoys ready

Postby Sam Newman » Tue Apr 12, 2011 5:17 am

Not long now. The 1st weekend of May is the game bird opening day over here. Getting the decoys ready.
I have a 14 foot alluminium dinghy that I plan to have a good ol' slaughter from. Can't wait to blast em. We have loads of Canada Geese, Pukekos, Mallards, Swans, Quails, Pheasants, Turkeys and Parrys.
I also have a farmer friend with hundereds of Parrys to shoot. He hates them eating his grass and I love eating them, so it works out great for both of us.
Anyone from this site who would like to come to NZ for a float down the river, or build a hide on the side of a lake with me, is welcome to stay at my place. It's not flash, but it's my hunting pad and I love it. I will be cooking some of my kill in a Hangi (traditional maori oven in the ground) and also smoke some, roast some and make some into soup.
I have 30 possum traps set tonight. When I was setting them, I noticed fresh wild pig sign, so I will take my rifle with me when I check the traps in the morning. I will also be fishing for Snapper, Travelly, Kahawai, Cod and other salt water fish. Also snorkelling for Paua, Kina and if Im lucky, Crays. We also have the biggest fresh water eels. ENJOY!

Thanks Brandon327. I will make sure to keep you updated on the hunts.
Aweyerman, just let me know when your flight arrives. You can fly to Auckland international airport and then catch a small plane or bus to Kaitaia. I can pick you up from there. Just chip in for petrol, ammunition etc. All good mate.
When I checked my possum traps today, there were heaps of Mallards and Grey ducks all hanging out in the swampy lakes. Got close to some wild pigs too. I was ready with some solid 12g shot, but the reeds where so tall where they were hiding that I couldn't see where to shoot. I will try again tomorrow morning. I made sure not to scare them away.

Duck hunting opening day is next week, so I have been working hard, getting ready. I got cammo nets, ammo, clothing etc. The flash motion decoys are too expensive, so I have decided to make my own. Here is the Parry splasher.

and I painted my quadbike cammo.

I also made a Mallard drake with rotating feather wings that flashes and splashes.

 Yes. I'm eating well. Bought a new type of shot. I'm loving it. Got 3 ducks with 1 shot just as they were landing. My decoys are working well. I didn't have my retriever with me the other day so I had to cross the swamp myself. When I got to the shot duck I noticed it was diving upside down. With a closer look, I realised there was a huge eel taking my kill down deep. I had to fight it off with a stick. So all is well. Bellys full. Went fishing on Ninety Mile Beach yesterday. Got a Kahawai, Snapper, a dozen Crabs a School Shark and some Mussels. Got 6 Possums today in my traps. I have some work on this week but I'll be back into it next week. I will try to send you guys some photos then. Enjoy!
