Well that shows just how bad things are getting. Where is the Morganza and where will that water go.

Morganza going to open Saturday per levee board official that i know. All that water gets diverted between the guide levee's basicaly from avoyels parish all the way down to Terrebone and St. Marys parish, but it cuts through portions of Iberville, Pointe Coupee parishes also. Theres gonna be a hugh fallout from them opening Morganza, 1000's of camps, homes, and businesses. getting nasty down here

people build in flood zones and dont expect water?? I mean they are on a river between two rivers. I hope it all turns out well but I dont see that happening. Our camp will probably flood as well on larto lake.

The Morganza Spillway is just south of the Old River Control Structure, around False River, LA. The water diverted will flow through the Atchafalya Basin, to the Atchafalya River, and to the Gulf. This will flood Morgan City, LA. Morgan City is currently at 6.6 ft on the Atchafalya River (flood stage is 4'), and the crest is expected at 12-13 ft on May 25th. There are a set of locks at Charenton, LA that can be opened that would divert water to the Bayou Teche, then to the Baldwin Cut and into Atchafalya Bay, north of Marsh Island. Water flowing through the A. River, also has an outlet through the Calumet Cut (Wax Lake Delta).

I don't believe it is for sure. Saturday is the first time that the flow rates are conducive to its operation. Was told by someone very close to the situation that the decision had not been made, as of last night, when to open. Just FWIW.

It is really something, though. The floodway is open and forested land 99% of the time. They are basically cracking the river banks to let the water run over land and over to the Atchafalaya.

Those photos of the deer are amazing! I really get a knot in my throat when I think of the fate that awaits some of those animals. How humane is a hunter's bullet, in comparison.

Yeah, wondering that too. Vicksburg shows 56.5 on the 15th. That's 4 days till crest at 57.5. Better slow down come the 15th.

John Barry, author of Rising Tide, was interviewed this morning on a radio station in Mobile and made some interesting points. He said Morganza would be opened because the alternative would lead to flood stages that would top the levees in New Orleans. He mentioned that the projections show 21' in New Orleans without opening the gates. The levees are only 20'. He also mentioned that the present flood is about 90% of the volume of the 1927 flood. The high water marks in 1927 were set the day the crevasse developed just before the Delta was flooded so the high water stages don't reflect the true volume of water from the 27 flood.

We are praying for all you folks in the Delta. I have a lot of friends over there and I hope everyone manages to stay dry.

New river stages out for wed. Crest at greenville now been raised to 65.0ft. still forcasted to crest on May 16th.

Also heard the Governor was coming this afternoon to see for himself.

I would have thought the volume of the 2011 flood would have been much less volume than 90% of the 27 flood. The rain events that led up to the 27 flood were much greater. Also, with the lack of leveys as well as the leveys breaking, it was spread out over a much vaster area and still managed 56 ft.
