Doves
Anybody ever heard of planting canola seeds for doves? I was thinking about planting some for dove season this year and I was wondering if any of yall had ever shot doves over it.

I haven't heard of anybody planting them but I am no sunflower expert. I have farmers in the area that I work that plant a High Oleic variety of sunflowers for the higher oil content that some people say the birds like more so that may be a good thing for going with the Canola.

I didn't know canola was good for birds. Lots of it in Canada and Dakotas, waterfowl want hit it.

Re: Doves
Growing up in Canada, canola fields were everywhere. I never saw birds using them as a food source like a sunflower or wheat field. That's not to say they don't use it, but there are much better options if you are planting specifically for doves.Double R 2 wrote:I didn't know canola was good for birds. Sesame seeds.. try that if you want to experiment.. plus its got some advantages over sunflowers. More drought. Resistant and deer deer won't damage it.. least thats what the man on the tv show said

they will definitely hit sesame. even when they spill cnaola the ducks don't touch it.

I thought the only thing more drought resistant than a sunflower was a rock.
Man, mine did great in the drought of 2010. Even had some on tops of fishpond levees and they made heads the size of paper plates.
But if you have a big patch of goatweed........

One of the strangest places I've ever hunted was a watermelon and cantaloup field that had been run over with a bush hog. Was also one the best dove fields I've ver been on.

And all of the mama doves had to tell the young doves, "don't spit the seeds in the pool!"
