The main family room TV is like a rifle, and the sound system is the scope. Don't buy a $1200 Kimber and slap a Tasco (or no scope at all) on it. Go get a Vizio at Sam's and spend the difference on a good receiver and speakers.

Got that covered in a really good Sony system. Going to have to upgrade to blue ray / DVD rather than just DVD at some point though.

For a dark room, nothing can beat Plasma. DLP is the bomb, but with LCD and Plasma technology where they are at, DLP isn't a good option. I own a 42" DLP and LOVE the thing. I do replace the bulb once a year in it is the only downfall. You will get a richer picture out of Plasma over LCD. However, most rooms aren't dark enough for Plasma, thus most everyone owns an LCD. Besides that, you can get alot bigger TV in Plasma than you can for an LCD. I was pricing a 32" Sony (KDL-32EX400 I think) for a bedroom TV while back. I could of gotten a 46" Plasma for the same price as the LCD.

Concerning sound system, if you plan to hook it up to a receiver, then don't be to concerned about the OEM sound quality. For something like a bedroom TV, crank up the volume in the store to make sure you can hear the thing. I've seen some sets that at 100% max volume, you could barely hear the thing 6 or 8 feet away from the TV.

don't wanna highjack the thread but I'm told the best blue ray player/DVD you can buy is the Sony playstation 3...something about the processor in 'em or something...and for the same money as a high end blue ray the SP3 also plays games...I didn't go that route but just thought I'd throw it out there.

We just went through this. I went with a 46" Toshiba lcd 1080 and 120hz. Very pleased and sabe $250 versus the Samsung. Not saying Samsung is bad I just got more bang for my buck. Best prices were at best buy in Madison. Also most all of your tvs have LG components in them and the Insignia at best buy is made by Sony.
