2011 Hatch
2011 Hatch
Well, we know the land inside the levee was hit AGAIN by flooding so I am sure the hatch there will be 0. Overall though it was a dry nesting season for most of the state. I hunt mostly in the Delta and have seen 0 poults on our place as of yet. Traveling thru the hills I have seen several hens with poults and heard reports of many others. What are yall seeing?
Are we gonna get wet?

Re: 2011 Hatch
Been seeing a few gobblers on the tree cameras but don't have any hens or poults to date. Hoping they moved across the road in some thinned pines for the time being. I have talked to a few on the river that said they are seeing turkey tracks on some of the roads which is a good sign. I bet they shut the season down on the river for a few years.

Re: 2011 Hatch
I was headed home back Friday afternoon after checking on some corn I planted in a duck hole and saw three hens in a pasture with at least 7 or 8 poults in tow. Those were the first poults I've seen this summer.

Re: 2011 Hatch
Up here in the corner we seem to have eked out a pretty good hatch. We had small river and creek flooding from rains around the same time the Mississippi flooding was drowning the delta. I'm sure the majority of the nests and eggs in the bottoms and low-lying areas were destroyed, but I saw a good number of birds move to higher ground to nest. I even saw two hens nest on the shoulder of Hwy. 2, and manage to survive the traffic, and raise a couple of poults each. Birds that nested in the hills had a great hatch. We had about four hens that nested in the woods along the pasture behind the house, and they each had six or so poults. Three or four weeks later there was a second nesting and hatch from the low land birds that the water ran into the hills. Their late hatch wasn't as good as the first round but still a good number of poults. And, to top it off, about two weeks ago a hen crossed the back yard, and had one brand new poult in tow. Don't now if that indicates a third hatch around here, or just an isolated incident. All-in-all, though, the numbers look pretty good here, with the flood refugees making a decent come back in the hills.

Re: 2011 Hatch
Its been the best hatch I've seen in a long time in central Montgomery county. Saw poults very early too... Middle to late May had four hens out in the horse pasture behind the house everyday, they had a total of 34 about 2 weeks old. Out of those 34 or so, 15 are still alive. But I have seen a couple with only one or two poults. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say around the house the average will hopefully be 2.5 or 3 per hen, which is outstanding!!!
Re: 2011 Hatch
Saw 17 total today in a group feeding in a field while planting, 7-8 were hens rest were poults.

I cannot remember the last time I've seen so many poults. We had one hell of a year.
