6.0 ford diesel?
I am in the process of looking for a truck to use on the weekends and in the summers pulling the boat and tractor to and from the woods. I sold my half ton Z71 because it felt like the tranny was going to fall out of it when I hooked up a load. I have a company car so I don't need to use it during the week. I found a 2007 Ford that I really like but it has the 6.0 diesel in it. The guy said they put a new motor in it at the ford dealership when it hit 100k miles because of something with the EGR heads going bad. I don't know chit about these trucks, but I know I want a diesel. It's got 115k on it now and I was a little disappointed in the power it had when I drove it yesterday. He showed me the paperwork on the new motor and it was close to $7k for the motor.
Give me some insight on what you would do? this truck is as clean as i've seen, but I don't need to purchase a lemon that I will use to get around in on the weekend. Does it hurt to let a diesel truck sit up a majority of it's life? I only put 600 miles on my last truck about every 3 months, but when season rolls around I will be traveling a good bit to the delta in it.

i've got 2 diesels for sale. just texted you. not sure which number since you have a work cell, personal cell, playa cell, beach house cell, etc.
Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
find a 7.3!! 6.0 has bad rep on blowing head gaskets and other head issues.. think about when you get ready to sale it ??? hard to sale a 6.0

They dont call the 6.0 a "sick-0" for nothing. Dont matter what has been replaced, it will happen again. EGRs, intercoolers, head studs breaking, blowing head gaskets. You couldnt give me one. It will cost you more than a truck note to keep it running.

yeah, I got heartburn on this deal. I'm going to have to take a pass on the truck. I've heard too many bad things and i'm scared to death of the injectors on the diesels too. Thanks for the responses.

If you are set on a Ford and a diesel, get a newer one (even though the new fancy diesel emissions stuff zaps the fuel economy, the new Superduty's are the best HD Diesel Pickups on the market now), or keep you eye out for a 2003 or older is good condition with a 7.3L. Less power, but with a basic programmer, you can boost the power to 6.0 levels easy, plus it's a great engine. Or get a Duramax. Especially one with an LBZ (last engine model they made before the new emissions stuff '06.5+'07). TONS of power, the best Auto Trans on the market (6 speed Allison), great fuel economy, and waaaay more reliable than a 6.0.

My 6.0 is in the shop right now . Some kind of fuel pressure sensor malfunction and all kind of chit has to come off to get to it including the turbo .

60% of the time, it works every time.
Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
The below information is bades on Fords whom I'm partial to and have been around the most.
2003 model 7.3L will be your best year for the 7.3L. It's the last year, so it will have the highest power rating and all the updates.
If you want older and just as durable, find you a 1997 7.3L. Its the last of the square body style Fords before the Super Duty came out in 1999. This is your cheapest purchase, yet will still give you all the power of a diesel that your looking for. You just won't have the feature comforts in the interior of the newer Super Duty.
If you want newer truck, find a Build 2 version of the 6.4L in the 2008 to 2010 model trucks.

Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
I wish I could get a newer one, but I don't want to spend over $25k for a truck that I am not going to drive that much. I might wait a little longer to purchase. The wife has not been happy with me using her SUV to pull around the stuff. I might try to find a 6.0 liter gas burner 1500. i've been using her SUV, which has the 6.0 max in it and it seems to do fine pulling the trailer.

Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
I have the same questions and want someone to offer suggestions on F250 diesel vs V10.
I have found a 2010 V10 that is much, much less than the diesels.
thanks

Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
Whatever you do, don't buy a 6.0 ford diesel. We bought several for work, and the problems are never ending. Ford/international tries to claim it is lack of maintenance on our part. Total bs. They said to run only motorcraft air filters, oil filters, fuel filters etc. Only motorcraft gold antifreeze, and distilled water in the coolant system. We did all that to no avail. IMO, this engine is a complete lemon. I have experience with several and all of them have been junk.

Less power, shorter lifespan, and horrible fuel economy. But if you aren't towing real heavy stuff, for the price difference, you can buy a lot of gas for the cost savings of not buying a diesel.cody's guide wrote:I have the same questions and want someone to offer suggestions on F250 diesel vs V10.

Complete other topic, but where do we as consumers get some recourse on this. The 6.0 ford, the coil packs on the 5.4 triton...and dont get me started on that pos 3 piece sparkplug, the front hubs, electrical system, and steering box on a chevrolet. All widely known issues, that happen in and out of warranty yet they do nothing but pretty much say tough chit to every issue. When and how do we as consumers start holding auto makers accountable? The government makes them do all this emissions bs and that causes some of the issues, but how bout hold them accountable for making vehicles with costly issues, and allowing the auto makers to keep producing vehicles with these issues. Its like they make a product and put it on the market and then allow the consumer to do the r&d and fix it at their costs.
Re: 6.0 ford diesel?
Don't know where you gettin your info from but since 2006 the 6.0 injected ford diesel built by international has had less warrenty/repair claims than ANY other Ford product made! Yes there were problems in the first years of it. It reportedly cost ford hundreds of millions in warrenties and buybacks of over 500 vehicles. But since the changes it has been the most reliable thing on the market. I still prefer the 7.3 but I need the raw power and don't care about the fuel milege. You only get that from cubic inches! But the 7.3's are all getting some age on em now and really do have some hard to start issues after several years. The 6.0 is the way to go if you get the newer version and go in and reprogram or get a chip for it. 20 mpg and all the power you need is nothing for this engine after an aftermarket chip is installed.3spop wrote:Whatever you do, don't buy a 6.0 ford diesel.
