Best off the shelf .308 round

Postby lipsplitter39654 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:53 am

Any suggestions on what round is the best store bought round for long range medium size game hunting for a .308. 600 yards and less. Not going to reload so what is the best all around bullet. Looking at the Nosler, Barnes, and Hornady in the 165 or 168 grain and dont want hollow point. thanks for the help

its second hand, but for what its worth i used to shoot with a guy in your "boat", and all he shot was federal premium 168 grain boat tails. i seen him drop does out past 800 yrds. now granted he was shooting a custom gun, full bull barrel, macmillian stock, and shmit & bender scope, but the ammo was dead on. he was putting holes in a dimes at a hundred yards and ringing 10inch plates at a 1000yrds. don't know if it was the best factory ammo, but it was good ammo and fairly easy to find

I have a similar topic on the bullnettle forum under guns and ammo if that helps.

Not sure about .308 but I shoot Hornady Customs for my .300 win mag and they have performed well. The furthest I have made a kill is 220, but the ballistics on them are good. I believe 7.5 in drop at 300 yds and 3100 fps at the muzzle

I will second or third Hornady SSTs. Can't speak for the factory loads, but I handload them for my 7mm-08 and they are by far the most accurate of all I have tested in my Ruger Compact.

Go with Hornady Superformance in the SST bullet. Its bad to the bone in my .270.

Hornady sst, nosler ballistic tip, Sierra gameking( ones with the ugly lead nose) are three of the best deer bullets as well as some of the most accurate. Your gun will shoot one beter than the others. Bad stock and action fit as well as crappy triggers are often a bigger problem than what bullet you are shooting. The three mentioned give pretty good weight retention (read penetration) with good fragmentation.
