quick fix fo water control pipes

Postby indamarsh » Fri Sep 30, 2011 8:11 am

one of our pipes which holds water from running back to river has rusted out on the bottom. is there any products available to wrap and seal it? the hole is fairly large maybe 3' x 1'. the pipe is corrugated steel. if I can't wrap it in some fashion, I guess I will have to fill it with sandbags. any ideas?

They make rubber pipe sleeves that are for that exact issue. Find your local pipe distributor and they will fix you up.

Won't be much help to you this year, but go by your local NRCS office and put in an application for WHIP or EQIP. You may qualify for cost-share to replace the pipe.

you could shove a smaller diameter pipe in and backfill around new pipe to fill in the gap. may need some quicrete though. or dirt and sandbags..

My opinion is that by the time you dig out to fix the pipe thats there, with the cost of supplies and time spent... Just go ahead and replace it with a plastic one... You will be dealing with that original pipe, money and time, way longer than... you would it you just installed a new one!!!

Bite the bullet and replace it. There are many cost share programs available to offset the expense. Corrugated pipe is crap, especially if you have ag water running through it (particularly rice). Go with steel pipe minimum .250 wall up to 20" and .312 or .375 for diameters above that.

Dan, why is rice worse? Fertilizer?

When we replaced ours last year, Ricky told me catfish ponds were tough on metal pipes. Something about all those nutrients.

Yep, rice and fish pond runoff can be pretty high in nitrates and ammonia. After looking at several thousand pipes in the last 4-5 year there is no doubt the rice and fish pipes take beating. Fish particulary once the ponds have been drained. I'm sure there is a reason, but I'm not smart enough to know it. The other thing I can't stand about corrugated is the coupler bands. That's a sure way to spring a leak and they are a pain in the butt.

I would've used plastic if I wasn't afraid I'd tear it up with a tractor or burn it while doing prescribed fire.

but it wont tear up the equipment when you hit it like a steal pipe. my risers do have a metal frame that bolts on and sealed with silicon.
