Poison Ivy/Oak Remedies

Postby duramax » Thu Oct 06, 2011 9:42 am

Well it's bow season again, and with that, I have gotten poison Ivy again. I swear I'm not allergic to anything, except poison ivy/oak. I get it without fail every bow season from setting up deer stands and climbing trees. This one ranks up there with the worst I've ever had it. All over my hands, forearms, stomache, and my forhead too. I'm doing all the usual things. Using the $15 Tecnu Poison Ivy scrub 2x a day, even using salicytic acid acne treatment since it's supposed to dry up oil on skin occasionally during the day. I use a blow dryer on all the affected areas 2x a day as well.

Anyone else have any other tips or tricks to get this stuff gone faster?

ummmm, quit using the blow dryer!!!! Heat makes it worse, take cold showers not hot. Bad as I hate to do it, go get a shot. I am very allergic to it, spend sevral days in bed last year with eyes swolen shut.

Im also highly allergic. This year ive been taking a clorox bath every time i get back from woods and have yet to get it or ticks. If i do get it i get a shot and steriod pack. As bad as yours sounds i'd be heading to the Doc asap.

I'm a couple days away from getting the shot. I got a shot a couple times I had it bad in college. The hair dryer is to dry up the open locations and relieves itch. It's hot water that makes it worse.

if you will use Tecnu scrub at the end of each day you spend in the woods, unless you are HIGHLY allergic it should prevent you from ever breaking out, and will severely minimize is you do get any break out...but you gotta use it each time you spend in the woods in potential or direct contact. I keep it at my camp and use it every shower I take at the camp until cool weather and the stuff is not a problem anymore

The doctor used to give me a prescription creme called betamethasone. It worked pretty good.

yeah, it's really most effective at preventing...it doesn't do a lot for curing anything, other than help control any spreading. But if you'll use it as preventative after you are in the woods, it zaps any you may have on you that will eventually turn into a break out. I learned it from some family of mine that farm, they live by the stuff...bath every night they are in the field...

get some gold bond and pat it on there with a rag several times durin the day, it helps a whole lot to dry up the oozing, you shouldn't have to worry about it spreading anymore if you used some cortaid or some other type of scrub, the spreading is caused from the urushiol on the leaf not the oozing of the sore, so as long as you've scrubbed it good it wont spread... good luck man bein a tree surgeon i get it bout every other week, really sucks
