ASK DS: IPADS

Postby tombstone » Wed Nov 16, 2011 9:07 am

Both kids are wanting Ipads. Santa Claus is having trouble coughing up this cash.

I have looked around on ebay and it seems the best prices for Ipad2 16gb wi-fi (no g3) is 489.00.

Does anybody else have suggestions of where to shop for some better prices or is that gonna be about it? Anybody have experience with the Kindle or the vizio touchpads???

You guys are far more resourceful than google. Thanks for the help

iPad is the best tablet, IMO. I have a Kindle and it's cool, but just for reading and very limited internet access. I've also tried out an HP Touchpad (given to me at an event) and it honestly is pretty close to the iPad. The only things holding it back are lack of apps and the fact that HP has since discontinued it (but after a price drop to $99 and huge sales, they make bring it back).

The iPad is expensive, but it really does it all and does it well. Very user friendly.

Unless they 100% have to have an iPad2, the added camera on the 2 and slightly thinner body isn't worth the extra money. Look for an iPad and it will do everything the 2 does, just without the camera.

You can pick up a used 16GB WiFi iPad for around $250 to $300. Apple lists the 16GB WiFi for $499, $10 more than your seeing on ebay.

I was looking for an Ipad 1 just have not found them. Don't really want a used one though. That was definitely the way I wanted to go. Any links or suggested sites to search. Thanks!!

prices on new ones are not going to be that far from each other, i would be surprised if you find more than a 20-25 difference in Apple's price and anywhere else, get one and teach them to share, they are not cheap that's for sure

I have never really fooled with any of the tablets. What do they do that your smart phone or computer doesn't? Do you have to pay a monthly fee like a cell phone or do they work off wi-fi or what?

If your wanting to buy new, your greatest availability will be the iPad2. This is what everybody has in stock now. You may find some places that have old stock and can offer the iPad1, but it may be more expensive due to the older stock price. Amazon has the iPad1 for $500, but isn't a sale supplied by Amazon.

What is your reasoning for not wanting used? These devices carry VERY little warranty, so warranty is not a concern of new versus used. If your concerned about data, you can use iTunes to "restore as new". This will erase all previous content

+1
My son is in Venture (gifted program) at school and they recommended buyin one cuz they can use 'em in that class. We did that ^^^^, found a ipad 1 on ebay that was only slightly used. We bought it in August and I swear he hasn't put the d@mn thing down since then. With Christmas around the corner, it's just gonna be a little harder to come across one tho.

My 3 and 5 year old use ours everyday.......they fought over it so much I luckily made a company throw me in an extra one when buying something from them recently. There's definitely no difference that a young kid could benefit from between the Ipad 1 and 2. If you aren't wanting to spend that much money though........the big after thanksgiving day sales are all going to feature touchpad's this year. Most of them will be Android based and will be anywhere from $50-200 from what i've read. If you don't have to have the apple brand and it's just for them to play games.....you may want to look into it.

I bought an Ipad2 a few months ago. $499 directly from Apple. Someone warned me before I bought that I needed more than the 16 if I planned on putting any movies on it. Now I wish had sprung an extra $100 to get the 32. By the time I downloaded 4-5 Mickey Mouse movies for my kid the whole hard drive was filled up. It really doesn't hold many 2 hour movies, especially if they are in HD.

It means you can install apps that aren't in iTunes. Now, every update has to be jailbroken. This means everytime the device is update, you have to redo the jailbreak. I know some people with iPhones that are still on iOS 3 because they don't want to update.

Unless you really into the ability to dig into the root structure of the software, it's not really a need.
