I spec you better go back and look at some figures on that. But in a possible running situation, in possibly thick brush, no more than a hundred yard shot? First choice would be an 870 flinging 3.5" 000 buckshot out of an extented choke. No need to worry about a blood trail. You hit him with a load of that he ain't takin another step. It's also real funny to watch em do that nose roll from wide open too! My second choice would be a model 94 3030. Preferably a saddle carbine.

What Is the largest grain round for a 30/30? I'm going by Kenetic energy down range. The 240 grain hollow point delivers quite a bit more than the standard 30/30 round. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong balistic chart or one that has not been updated. My chart only goes to 180 grain for the 30/30

Fill me in. That is what I'm looking for in this thread is information. I like to have all the info I can get before I make a choice on anything

If youre wanting more than one shot then rule this out and get a pump or lever gun, but my .444 handi rifle is deadly in that range and my futherest track job is 10 yards. It'll blow through some trash too. Its become my 200yds and under go to. Youre welcome to come get it and try it if tou want.

A .44 mag factory load 240gr jacketed hollowpoint average velocity is around 1760fps. That equates to 1651 ft.lbs. of energy at the muzzle.

A 30-30 shooting Hornady's 160gr FTX bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2400fps. That equates to 2047 ft.lbs. of energy! Big difference!

Not to mention a 30/30 would be a lot cheaper than the pistol for the same purpose

Next question is if I chose to go with a short lever gun what caliber would you go? Would you stay with the 30/30 or go something like a 444 or 35 Remington or something like that?

Its not too bad with the Hornadays but Remington buck hammers or whatever they ate called will rattle your teeth loose. That being said I have never felt it shooting a deer and I sight it in on a vice also.

+1 on the 870 slug gun. If you have an old 870 laying around order the rifled cantilever barrel, top with scope, and you are in business. I've got one and it's deadly. No need to use the 3 inch shells. They are just more expensive and kick more. The 2 3/4 do just fine.

I don't have an 870 but I will check on the pricing of a slug barrel for my Browning BPS. That may be my cheapest route

Remington 7600 Carbine in 30-06 with 180 grain Accubonds. A See Thru scope rings with 3x9 scope. Knockdown, 5 shots, and great up close and at ranges others can't.

One thing I've learned from handloading is this, thanks to your handloading info BR..is You can take a 125 g hollow point and shoot our peice of steel and it will rock it about 8 inches..then you can take a 158 grain hollow point and shoot the same steel and it will spin it 3 or 4 times completly and almost take it out of the ground. Even though the the 125 has more muzzle energy and is moving alot faster. if you hit a bone in a deer, you cant tell me it wouldnt make a big difference with the heavier slow moving bullet verses the faster lighter bullet

This data is out of my 357 loading..
