Ask DS: Must Do things in Maui, HI
We are going to Maui in May. If you have been before, what are some of things that you just must do while you are there?

Dad took us there on a family vacation about 18 years ago. Things have probably changed some, but I recommend visiting the sanctuary north of town to snorkel, hit the seven sacred pools, drive up to the top of the Haleakala volcano (take a jacket and wear jeans, it's cold up there), and look into taking a catamaran over to Lanai as a day trip. Don't know about bars because I was 12, and I can't remember where all we ate. Those are just the things I remember doing that were fun.

All of the above are good. I really enjoyed Haleakala. The road to Hana was scenic and pretty cool, but will take the better part of the day. This is where the sacred pools are as well. What part of the island do you plan on staying? If you are near Lahaina I would check out the Old Lahaina Luau. If you decide to do this book it early because it fills up fast. We checked out the Iao valley and Iao needle while there and I would recommend that as well.

You don't find Dog... Dog finds you.

We went to the top of the Volcano as mentioned. We also went to a black sand beach a when we went as kids which was pretty cool. My dad actually knew someone who had an asparagus farm on Maui and we hunted Frankolin (like a chukar) and Pheasants one day which was pretty cool, but that was a fluke thing that we knew someone there where we could hunt.
The best thing to do there though is boogie board and surf. Great waves. My brother and I would spend hours boogie boarding every day. We were too young to learn to surf though.

Next question I was wondering is if you were going with family of four for 7 days (5 days of being there and 2 days of travel) how much spending money would you take? Our airfare and hotel is paid for. I was thinking 3,000.

Dog and lives and works in Honolulu when he's there. Maui is on a totally different island. His office was on the road near a place I was attending a meeting.free78 wrote:man ya'll left out the most important.....you got to go find dog the bounty hunter.

With kids I would stay at the Grand Wailea. It has a great pool with slides, etc for the kids. Definitely go eat at Mama's Fish House. A little pricey but probably one of the best restaurants in Maui. Get reservations a couple months in advance. Another great place to eat is Haili'imaile General Store. If you've got the cash, I would go on a helicopter tour.

YES! stuffed mahimahi was phenominal!meddawg wrote:Definitely go eat at Mama's Fish House. A little pricey but probably one of the best restaurants in Maui...
i don't know about the other islands, but the people on maui were some of the nicest people, as a whole.
the luau was fun and the pig was really good!
if you do a bike ride, i suggest maui mountain riders. we did the sunrise ride (wouldn't recommend that for kids...really early..shuttle picked us up at 3am at hotel...and really cold at the crater for sunrise). try and get pops or julio for a guide if you go...pop's son played for coach polk when he was coaching at georgia. you don't get to bomb down the mtn, but you do go through 3 or 4 distinct ecosystems in 28.6mi with no pedaling.
road to hana, as stated earlier, is pretty much an all day trip...we backtracked instead of going on at hana...wife was freakin out since we were in a sebring instead of a jeep, so i turned around....get a convertable rental, well worth it!
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...

We went in 2000. Save your money and take a nice helicopter tour.... we took a 3-1/2 hour tour. It flew around the entire island of Maui.....then across to the big island.... saw the most active volcano in the world..... Kilauea.... it is continuously erupting and running into the water..... they fly you over that..... really cool. Seems like it was around $400 a piece in 2000. They fly you up in the valleys like in Jurrasic Park...... 400 ft waterfalls..... really cool. We also did a dive/snorkel at Molokini Crater. It is about a 25 min boat ride from Maui....... very popular dive spot. Per Wikipedia it is considered one of the top 10 dive spots in the world.
My biggest regret is I couldn't get anybody in my group to spend the $80 on a plane ticket to Oahu and go to the Arizona Memorial. I wanted to see that history...... but didn't get to.
Also... there is alot happening on Front Street in Lahaina.... restaurants... lots of people walking around.....
We really had a good time.........

Hop a day flight to the big island and go to volcanoes national park. Day flights are super cheap and where else in the world are you gonna be able to stand in the caldera of an active volcano and see new earth being formed?

And the buffet at the Volcano House restaurant is pretty good. Home style roast beef, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, whole kernel corn, etc... All while watching steam vent out of the earth.mlj300 wrote:Hop a day flight to the big island and go to volcanoes national park.
