Re: HB 1422 8% beer in MS!
I honestly don't think I know of any church going people that are younger and vehemently against alcohol, the %, or sales on Sunday. Now the older folks seem to be against changing any of the laws regarding it. Glad they got some younger people in the state house and senate and put ole Steve Holland out of his power position. CAN NOT WAIT until we get some of these better beers. Any idea when the new law would go into effect? Waiting period after the governor signs?

If either bill (The house bill should go to Senate Committee soon, and the Senate Bill should go to the floor of the Senate by next week) passes both houses, and the governor signs it, they will become law on July 1st I think (I read one of them says that, can't remember which one).rjohnson wrote:I honestly don't think I know of any church going people that are younger and vehemently against alcohol, the %, or sales on Sunday. As for the Steve Holland quote - he sounded stupid, but he was telling the truth. Everybody knows you have to take 2 Baptists fishing with you, cause if you take one he'll drink all your beer

You know the only difference between a baptist and a catholic is that a catholic will wave at you when he sees you in the liquor store!

If you ever take a baptist fishing, take two so they won't steal your beer!mlj300 wrote:You know the only difference between a baptist and a catholic is that a catholic will wave at you when he sees you in the liquor store!![]()

When ever you have 4 baptists in a room together, there's always a fifth.

Anybody got any more info on the likelihood of getting to the gov's desk?

Re: HB 1422 8% beer in MS!
House Bill 1422 has been assigned to the Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee. It has to pass out of that committee to reach the Senate Floor. Considering that Senate Bill 2878 passed out of that committee and is waiting a floor vote, the odds of the HB making it out of the Senate committee are favorable.
We are currently waiting on the Senate to get to the floor vote. SB 2878 is item #48 on tomorrow's agenda. They, however, almost never go in order and the bill (and many others) were completely skipped on Friday when they let out early. Must be nice to decide to quit working whenever you feel like it.
Also of note on the Senate agenda for tomorrow: SB 2370 (which would allow breweries to brew beer over 5% alcohol by WEIGHT for sale in other states. Lazy Magnolia contract brews for companies in Alabama and Louisiana. This would allow them, and future breweries such as Lucky Town, to contract brew beer that would be sold outside of MS) and SB 2600 (would allow breweries to provide up to 6 samples no larger than 6 oz on brewery tours - currently, they are not allowed to give any samples). Both of these bills are up for a full floor vote.
If SB2878 passes, odds are at least one of the 2 bills will reach the Gov's desk. Last year, Bryant was opposed to it, but he recently told the MBJ that he's not "necessarily opposed" to raising the limit.
Either way, tomorrow could be an interesting day.
I'm hoping that the "He-Man Manly Night" RYP event at Underground 119 tomorrow is a celebration of more progress.

SB 2878 passed the Senate floor today. This is a great sign, since the HB is already in Senate committee. If this is any indication, it should pass the Senate as well. Which ever bill passes both houses first will go to the Governor to hopefully be signed. Current indications are that he would sign the bill.
Lazy Mag's two bills (samples and out of state brewing) also passed.
