As far as IPAs go, Torpedo underwhelmed me. I loved the Southern Hemisphere Fresh Hop Ale.

Have you had SN Ruthless Rye IPA? It's top shelf.

*southern hemisphere harvest ipa is a top 3 as one of the best i've had, but haven't been able to find it in years, due to timing...either just sold out or out of season by the time i got to good beer stores (out of state). have not had ruthless rye, yet.

strangely enough, i had same reaction to abita jackamo the first time I had it...completely underwhelmed. may've had a really fresh batch, where flavor hadn't fully developed yet - i've had it on tap, since, and the flavor was much more full-bodied and complete, sip-to-swallow and after.

*i'm confused...the southern hemisphere i had '09 is now their northern hemisphere, so technically the northern hemisphere is a top 3 favorite..Ah, now I got it..they used to mix wet undried cascade and centennial hops (northern) with wet undried hops flown in from new zealand.(southern)..it was a special limited run that i had and was only available in "road pop" sized bottles. they keep them separate for 2 distinct flavors..

The word I'm getting, and it's as I expected, is that the breweries already distributing in the state will be the first to roll out higher alcohol beers (Various Abita, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, and Rogue - among other breweries). There may even be some local Southeastern Breweries shortly thereafter. Some of the bigger boys and breweries from further away may take longer.

Have confirmation of the above from a friend that works for a distributor. Also I think he said Sam Adams will have a breakfast beer that is chocolate and bacon flavored...read really heavy beer. They got to try it and he said it was pretty good.

Gator I've been mulling over a great business idea for these new beers. Gotta get my business plan started though.

That is one thing about IPA's. The hops have so many flavors - there are so many variables that can affect them.

I will give Torpedo another chance when it's more readily available.

I used to always buy 2 beers (I actually had a 6 pack of Torpedo). That way I could try them at different times.

I've never been disappointed by any SN product. I was just underwhelmed by Torpedo. It wasn't bad, just not nearly as good as I'd hoped.

My go to IPA is Yazoo Hop Project. Unfortunately, Lazy Mag's Deep South Pale Ale (formerly Reb Ale, renamed bc they couldn't get those coona$$ LSU fans to buy it) - has consistantly been skunked for me. It should be one of the freshest Pale Ales I can get.

Looking forward to their new Hopstitality IPA. And if you can find it, drink Southern Gentleman. Southern Pecan aged in Jack Daniels barrels - it's undescribably good.

same here on reb ale, got a six pack and gave away 5 b/c i didn't care for it, at all...and as you say, should be the best ale due to freshness.

Perhaps we should take the beer discussion over to the beer thread in the Food Forum.

I say leave this thread open here so, if any developments in the attempt to tack Homebrewing to bill that isn't dead occurs - or if one of the two Lazy mag bills pass (no limit on contract brewing and brewery tour samples) passes.

I hope the contract brew bill passes. It will make it easier to raise the cap later. The ridiculousness of it would be great. A brewery in MS could brew beer in MS, but not sell it in MS because it would be above our limit. They could sell it out of state.

It would also allow them to possibly have a high gravity beer ready to roll out on July 1st. Maybe.... just depends on when the date goes into affect on the contract brew bill (if it passes and is signed).
