NOLA's one of the few places where it's probably easier to ask what places to avoid when it comes to food. There are just too many good ones.

If you're looking to avoid the crowds at Cafe Du Monde as others have suggested, I'd add Cafe Beignet on Royal as another good option. Pretty sure they have another location on Bourbon, but I've never been to that one.

Bingo! This is where we always go to get our Beignet fix, nice little hole in the wall place without all the tourist of Cafe du Monde.

I can't remember the name of the place but there are rainbows all over and it isn't that crowded and the people there are extremely nice.

1. Clancy's (Uptown; rabbit saugage roll appetizer)
2. Galatorie's (On Bourbon; lamb chops and mint jelly)
3. Antoine's (Lunch, softshell crab poboy and $0.25 martinis. Plus, I recommend going on the tour of the restaurant that they offer)
4. Bon Ton Cafe (On Magazine, Red fish Bon Ton is incredible! Bread pudding is great as weel - they do not cool the alcohol out of the bourbon in the sauce)
5. Drago's (Only for the Char-grilled oysters)
6. Mr. B's Bistro (BBQ Shrimp with extra bread to sop-up BBQ sauce, then walk across street to and have a drink at the rotating bar in the Monteleone Hotel)
7. Cochon (get the pigs cheeks and/or gumbo)
8. Cochon Butcher Shop (boudin and great sandwiches in the Wearhouse district. You can also buy vaccum sealed meats to bring back)
9. Bayona
10. Resturant August
11. K Paul's
12. Felix's (same as Acme, just no waiting line. Recommend the turtle soup and raw oysters)

I actually have a list of nola restaurants I would recommend with the type of food and price range. If you PM me your email address I can send it to you if you would like.
decent list right here. I would leave Drago's off, i would only spend my own money at Antoine's to go to the Hermes bar and get some atmosphere and history, the food is pricey and not that good but the history is great. Clancy's is the best upscale restaurant in the city, call for a reservation. For breakfast, i add either of the Surrey's, both are very good. Nice to see some one include Bon Ton, it is a consistently good place that doesn't get enough praise. Cochon butcher is a better deal than cochon with similar food, i would highly recommend the butcher for lunch. Bayona is a really good call, in its price point downtown you should add Pelican Club and GW fins, both are top of the line. Besh deserves to be on the list, but I'd list either Luke or Borgne ahead of August. August gets the public accolades but both of the afermentioned places are doing his food at better price points. He also has a small place in the the WW 2 museum for lunch, if you plan on heading down there. I eat at K Paul's regularly and like his food, i just wish he would improve his service. I don't wait in line at acme, call the owner at #504>>>>>. Seriously, its not the right time for oysters, people are getting sick all over the state. There is an assumption that its lingereing effectgs of the dispersants, or it could just be the extreme heat this year. Either way, i'd shy from the raw oysters for a few months. This is the first list not compliled by a local, that hasn't praised jaquemos in a long time?? That is fine with me. If you are hung over one day and just want a burger or some fries and a bloody mary hit Bruno's uptown. Also, Commander's jazz brunch is extremely pricey but is one of the "must do's" of NOLA eating at some point in your life. Other great brunches include Patois uptown which is really turning out some top caliber food these days.

TNBayouBengal wrote:Here's my "don't miss list" whenever I am in New Orleans:

Joey K's on Magazine Street- Awesome food and really affordable (ie- All you can eat catfish for $13.99). My favorite is the Shrimp Magazine pasta. They also have an awesome hamburger steak
Charlies Steakhouse on Dryades- Great steaks. Basic menu, but what else do you need besides steak and potatoes?
Eleven 79 on Annunciation- Wonderful Italian food. I honestly think this place is where old mobsters go to hang out (Joe, the owner, used to hang out with the "Rat Pack"). If you love veal, you gotta stop here.

On the way out, stop at Zuppardo's Grocery in Metairie (on Veteran's Blvd). It's an old school New Orleans grocery store with a great deli (I think they have like a dozen different types of salami) and bakery (be sure to get several loaves of the french bread).

Also, skip Cafe Du Monde for beignets. The Ritz-Carlton's beignets are WAY better, and you don't have to fight the crowd (especially if you get room service).
These are great suggestions from a "locals" standpoint. I used to eat a Joey K's and Charlie's Steakhouse back 20 years ago when I still lived in NOLA. Testament to the food that they are still going strong! Will have to try Eleven 79 as they were not on the scene back then!

Cafe Adelaide at the Loews hotel on Poydras has 25-cent martinis at lunch during the week. Just sayin'.

And I don't understand the love for GW Finn's. Been there twice in the past five years - service and food sucked both times. Will never go back again. There are 50 places nearby better than this.

Thanks for the second part of the list. Im putting together a list of restaurants and neat places to visit, organized by city. Since I visit New Orleans once or twice a year I can really use the input.

Great weekend and great food. Ate at Luke friday, jaquemos sat, and Felix Sun. Had reservations for GW Fins for sunday but cancelled to eat at Felix since we were already downtown and had had a few. All were fantastic. The highlight though was we were eating breakfast in a little place on Conti Sunday morning when in walks Larry Holmes and family. Wife and I both got pictures made - super nice guy. Texted pic to my son and he said who is that. For all you young folks he was the heavyweight champion of the world for years and even beat Ali. In boxing hall of fame. Very cool. Thanks for all the suggestions.
