Jap millet/coffee weed
Jap millet/coffee weed
What can I spray on my millet that's about 4-6" tall to knock back the coffee weed that's about as tall.
Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
2,4-D or Ultra Blazer.

Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
I was thinking 24-D. Does it harm the millet at any stage or can it be sprayed throughout the growth process?
Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
Hit it now at lowest recommended rate, much farther in the growth stage and you can stunt it pretty bad.
Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
I've never noticed any damage but maybe I hit it at the right time.

Cool. Thanks for the info guys
Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
I lucked out this year on a moist-soil impoundment. This particular impoundment has a good bit of 'elevation' in it and by the time I got to spray some portions of it this year, it had 5-6 ft tall coffee weed in it with a few grasses trying to establish underneath them, but not with much luck...and it was late in the summer when we sprayed it (HOT)..not favorable for millets to grow.. We applied 2,4-D and man the response was incredible. I usually spray coffeeweed when it is 4-8 inches tall but this impoundment got out of hand this year before I could catch up with it.
My theory is, the tall coffeeweed shaded the understory, creating a cooler environment for the millet to sprout and I essentially released it when we sprayed the coffeeweed.
But if anybody asks, I knew what I was doing all along
Should be alot of ducks in this place!!
Here is a pic of the coffeeweed in the field that we did not spray (note NOTHING growing underneath)

Pic of coffeeweed that was sprayed..hard to see it but there is a THICK stand of solid millet underneath the coffeeweed 'trees'

Zoomed in pic of the millets underneath the dead coffeeweed

Re: Jap millet/coffee weed
You say millet but are you meaning wild millet, as in barnyardgrass? Looks like some good stuff in there. If it's all natural, mow a hole in it for them to land and then they can swim up in that thick stuff. You'd be amazed at the ducks that will land in little lanes and open spots then pile up in that thick stuff.
Looks good!

Yeh, barnyard grass (wild millet). We flew Jap millet in this field 2 summers ago but didnt have much luck with it. This field is adjacent to a large lake and the field actually floods when the large lake backs into the field so there will be plenty of open water adjacent to the field for them to land in?Wingman wrote:You say millet but are you meaning wild millet, as in barnyardgrass? Would you still recommend mowing some of it down?
