I bought this and it works well. Thought it would be just another gimmick but it really does work.

I was the same way until i slowed down with the lansky and took my time focusing on making a nice even pass with consistent light pressure. That seemed to help a good bit. It's also important with those to make sure and keep the stone clean. Once you get one where you want it all you have to do is hit it with the fine one ever few weeks for pocket knifes and such.

+1

I bought a Lansky box from Bass Pro, but can't get it right either.

Get a Spyderco sharpener. Even I can use it successfully.

Won't get any sharper tab paper wheels and jewelers putty. All the carvers I know use them. So they hold their edge a long time?

My skinning knife is a buck 192, which is a good high carbon stainless steel. i sharpened it on the paperwheel and it was wicked sharp

i cleaned 2 does with it a week ago and i could still shave hair off my arm with it.

how well the blade holds the edge has to do with the angle it was sharpened, and the hardness of the steel.

a good carbon steel blade, or high carbon stainless blade at a 18-22 degree angle, you should only have to hit it on a set of crock sticks or steel after skinning a deer to get it back to a razor edge.

Never draw the knife or stone downward on the angle. ALWAYS draw it upward on the angle. Also, on the Lansky, you must clean it as the stone will get clogged.

I'm with Wingman though, give me a regular stone and a cup of water. Light equal pressure is all you need. Then use a piece of ceramic to polish the edge if you want to go that far.
