What the heck is this!?
This appears to be made of some sort of stone. It's very hard. Granite I think. Can't bust it with 3 lb sledge. It is about 1 3/8" in diameter but not perfectly round. It doesn't appear to be hand formed as there are no tool marks on it. Any ideas what it is?

Re: What the heck is this!?
Why would you want to bust it with a sledge hammer before finding out what it is?

To find out what it is!
I didn't find it....or hit it! A guy here at work brought it to me to see if I could figure it out.

Re: What the heck is this!?
My initial thought too. And I think we're on the right track. There is feed mill next door and it turns out they found it at the bottom of a two foot hole they dug. They thought it was a golf ball and tossed it. There has been a feed mill on that property for years and years but the old timers that still work there say it isn't anything that has been used there in their lifetime.Buckwabit wrote:Some kind of Grain grinding stone maybe??

Could it possibly be a game ball used by Indians back in the day?? Or maybe old stone shot?

Re: What the heck is this!?
I did a little more digging and this is exactly what it is. Probably thousands of ball like that would have been the grinding medium in a tumbler type mill. They're still in use today but much more modern obviously. My curiosity is piqued so that now I have to find someone that knows the history of that mill!landscaper wrote:My initial thought too. Re: What the heck is this!?
I wondered about both of these as well. What ever type of stone it is, though, is so hard it couldn't have possibly been hand hewn by any of the other native stone around here. And I think if it had been made to use as grape shot during the civil war it probably would have been more efficient to just make them from steel. I know there was an ammo shortage here at one point during the war, but think the old farmboy/soldiers from these parts just packed the cannons with whatever stone, horse shoes, railroad spikes, etc that they could get their hands on.sevenhead wrote:Could it possibly be a game ball used by Indians back in the day??
