I know I know get a Honda.
Looking at purchasing a small generator for running a small window unit/fridge/freezer during Hurricane outages. Is it worth it to go ahead and spend the $$$ and get a Honda? I found a 3500w Ridgid powered by a Subaru for $500 free delivery from Home Depot. I've lost power down here twice in 5 years due to Hurricanes/TS. Its easy to throw out "buy a Honda" but its hard to swallow that $$$ pill. Any suggestions?

Re: Generator
for an emergency, get the biggest thing you can possibly afford.
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.
Re: Generator
with Honda your buying quiet. doesnt matter how quiet your generator is when the whole nieghborhood is "up and running"

Listen to those guys.
You say small window unit/fridge/freezer. About the 3 worst things to try and run when you consider the amount of amps they pull during startup. I would suggest soemthing in the 6500w range, powered by Honda. I'm starting to get away from Briggs engine as I have nothing but trouble with them. Even the small Honda GC160 engine on pressure washers have a diaphram fuel pump.
Generators are rated in watts, but most UL tags are amps. Just remember that amps times volts equals watts. Add everything up and don't exceed the generator's rated output.
If you plan to backfeed through your panel, MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE MAIN BREAKER OFF. Granted you will try to power every home on the circuit and the gen breaker will trip, but there is a risk you will injur or kill the linemen trying to get your grid power restored.

Re: Generator
You can get a Generac 5500 for a hair more than the one you are looking at. They make dang good generators too.
Re: Generator
IF you really want comfort get a whole home generator. I did that seven years ago and some of the best money I have spent at my home.
Re: Generator
Anyone else have any experience with this generator? All the dang reviews look really good.SHANE704 wrote:champion makes a 3500w genny thats hard to beat for the money.

Re: Generator
Mr. Hurricanes here. Learn from my mistakes. GET A FREAKING HONDA. The biggest you can afford. If it don't crank when everyone else is running there generators, your fooked. My Honda's crank, every time. My others, did not.

Re: Generator
I cannot stress what everyone else is saying in that get the biggest and dont get less than 6500.
I personally own a 12.5kw Kubota diesel and can run anything on my house, not all at once, but anything in my home.

Re: Generator
Go ahead and buy this weekend. Sometime within the next two weekends the weather channel will report a tropical depression off the coast of africa, the report will include video of Katrina and the demand and prices for all generators will increase!
