I had to do an expirement in college on people wanting to quit and the most effective method was just overdoing it until it made you sick. It was on the theory of food aversion. If people eat something and it makes them sick they will not want it again with the one exception of alcohol. But seriously the people who smoked would put their cigarette butts in a mayo jar with water and let it get rotten then anytime they wanted a smoke they would open the lid and smell it and the desire would go away. The people who dipped just ate a can and got really sick and would turn green haha and for the next two months at least they didn't want another dip.

Interesting... I doubt eating a can would make me sick but it could be worth a try.

You just have to do it with something that WILL make you sick. Just something to cause a connection between getting sick as hell and whatever it is you want to stop.

Alot of people I know who have either quit or tried to quit have done so or gave a good effort with the assistance of sunflower seeds. A typical can of snuff can contain over 1100 mg of salt. So it's not only the nicotine addiction, but the salt cravings as well. Hence, sunflower seeds are a "highly-chosen" substitute for trying to quit.

I've got a can/day habit which has been going on since freshman year of junior college (14 yrs) and I curse the day I ever started. I've quit a few times in the past. Once for 6 months. 3-6 weeks is the average time I've quit for. Then I get the idea, "one dip isn't gonna make me start again." BULL CHIT. I've always gone back after just "one little tiny dip".

With my wife and I expecting our first child in September, I really do need to quit now more than ever. I do not want my kids seeing me do it and get the idea that "well if daddy does it, it must be ok." It's all about will power and trusting that the big man upstairs will give you the inner strength to stay the course. I'm quitting soon. But prolly not today.

I quit around Christmas 2 years ago BEST decision ever. The cravings never go away they do dull gradually though.

If it weren't for my wife and son I wouldn't have quit...

Little story about my dipping, quiting and chewing. About 12 years ago i had a can a day habit, loved it. My wife (x now) was a dental hygentist, she was constantly griping( b..ching) about it, so I decided i would quit. I had quit for about 6 months and was doing good then hunting season rolled around, I found it impossible to sit in a blind with out a dip. I was in the quickie mart one day and picked up a pouch of Lancaster and it was on like a chicken bone. I was like a drug addict hideing it, would sneak a cup upstairs just to keep it under the radar so I wouldnt have to listen to the magpie b..ch. The only persons that knew was a couple of close friends and my wonderful hunting buddy (my son). Well he had brought home a bad report card and I had grounded him till he got his grades up (no camping, 4 wheeler, computer games etc.). I was sitting upstairs in the den watching tv with my mouth full of lancaster and my cup well hidden and in walks my son, he said dad i'll make a deal with you, I said ok son what cha got? he says how bout you take me off being grounded and I won't tell mom you started back dipping. I said I tell you what, how bout I go downstairs and tell your mom then I come back up here and beat your booty. He said "nevermind" I still need to quit, wish I could, but I just enjoy it so much!

When I was in the 6th grade I got caught dipping by my mom. She made me eat a can of Skoal Straight that had one dip from a 6th grader (me) out of it, so it was full. Now, I didn't dip much after that until probably 8th or 9th grade, and now I dip Copenhagen to the tune of a couple cans a week and a can or so a day on hunting and recreational weekends....I am 30 years old and to this day I will gag if I smell straight flavored dipping tobacco. So it's a testament to your study and those effects, but a testament to how addictive the stuff is, I've gagged myself for a dip of straight several times when there was no other options and I was hard up! :?

Ha ha reminds of a story when I was about 10. I had just been grounded for bad grades and a little altercation at school. Right after being grounded I told my dad I was leaving when I got out of the shower. I step out of the shower to find my bags packed and a dad wanting me to make good on my promise. Well, after sitting at the base of the tree in the front yard for about 30 min. I decided I didn't want to leave after all.

Kids will copy what they see. My oldest was about 3 at the time when the church pre-school director (real sweet lady) got on to my wife because our boy decided it was cool to walk around and spit streams on the carpet at church. My wife was not happy with me especially when I laughed.
