What do the cold packs do?

I'm not a chemist but I'm guessing it has a fair amount of ammonium nitrate in it. Reminds me of this time I was going to fertilize a pond. I looked at what the pond guy said to use and thought to myself-'Self, you got all that at the house'. So I get home and dig out a sack of ammonium and a sack liquid soluble something else (from the greenhouse days) and started mixing them in an old stainless steel milking jug. I knew I was in trouble when I started to see ice forming on the outside of the jug. It was all I could do to pry that sucker off the bottom of the jon boat.

We played with this stuff 2 weeks ago. 3# at a time works well but it's not dynamite.

here's how to do the cold pack thing. Took 30 seconds to find it. It's on youtube. Nothing crazy and not illegal. Not like mixing diesel with ammonium nitrate or anything.
