I ran across something like that one time, and was told they are used to make "stone washed " jeans. They add them in the washer to give them the worn look. We couldn't out a dent in them either. Just don't put a torch to it!

I did some asking around and it turns out the city of Corinth used to (I don't know how long ago) generate it's own electricity. The generators were coal fueled and there was a huge tumbler type grinder here that they used to turn the coal into coal dust (so that it would burn more efficiently i guess) and that stone is the grinding media from that tumbler.
