From what I read it was pretty obvious this train wreck was coming. Again all my information is from what I read in the news which I assume is probably most frames of reference being used.

There were reportedly 20 football players at the play. These 20 were enrolled in a theatre class and were required to attend certain plays as part of the class. I don't think there are 20 football players in the entire SEC that gives a rat's butt about theatre. My thoughts are it was a class chosen from the catalogue where the athletic department could put "student" athletes who needed a good grade.

So we have 20 jocks in a theatre class and they are required to attend plays. I'm sure the plays that would be performed were known in advance. Someone in the athletic department in this day and age should have keyed in on 20 jocks at a gay play. Really?!?! People are surprised that there were issues.

Life is full of issues that don't match the moral or religious principals of a person. But we still have to deal with them. If a person wants to ride in on their white horse of indignation every time these come up great. I'm happy they don't have to work for a living and can say whatever they want about anything they want. Reality is the world doesn't work that way. I would challenge anybody to go to work in a company of any size and make derogatory comments about a gay employee or customer. Companies are just not going to put up with it. There's just to much exposure for the company not to.

In my opinion the proper way to handle this for a jock or anybody else that had a problem with the subject matter would have been to address those concerns prior to the play. Talk with the prof, the department head, the athletic department and on and on. The person should state clearly and state the reasoning behind why. If it is then required the person attends regardless of those beliefs then take it to the media and ACLU. Requiring a person to go cuts both way. But the absolute wrong thing to do is to go and make cat calls from the audience. That will just get you kicked out of school or suspended from the football team.

I also think this diversification class they are requiring everyone to go to because they can't isolate who it was is BS. Truth be told I bet it was a large number of players and the university couldn't suspend a bunch because that would hit the wires harder than the report that someone said something we just don't know who.

My 2 cents. I don't know crap and I'm an idiot. Just ask the 5 females I live with.

I'm just sick to death of this liberal agenda being forced on us. If you want to be gay, be gay. All I'm saying is don't try to force me to like it. Nobody's telling them they can't butt "@#$%#" each other, they can do that if they want, but why is it required that I condone it? If I'm supposed to be tolerant of your "@#$%#", shouldn't you be tolerant of my beliefs against it?

I'm not saying agree with it or even tolerate it. What I am saying is there are intelligent and mature ways to articulate that and interrupting a theatre performance is not one of those way. I think it is important to note that I don't believe the players were making any sort of moral or religious stand when they did what they did. Just a bunch of guys who are athletes and friends that were there because they needed the class credit. If any of them had moral or religious concerns they should have expressed those before and not gone. They should have kept their mouths shut, gotten the credit, and moved on. Instead they have now created a distraction that the team's coaching staff must deal with during the middle of the season.

I can only imagine what May have been said had me and a group of buddies (several of which are members of this site) been forced to attend, in a group, a gay theatre production when we were 18-20 years old in college.

+1

When you put a bunch of guys that age together in a place they don't want to be in the first place there is no telling what got said before they even had to go. And peer pressure is there as well, all it takes is one out of a group to start making a few whispered wisecracks in fun to become something several audience members or cast could hear, probably still in fun between them. Youngsters don't always realize when they offend someone. I would chalk it up to a bunch of guys trying to outcool the subject of a play they probably had to attend for credit.

I have it on good authority that peewee once attended a community theater production what had explicit homosexual themes and I don't recall him making a horse's rear end out of himself. Now, he might never come to another one, but nobody forced themselves on him or made him do anything he didn't want to do.

Oh yeah!!! I played baseball in junior college and if a group of us had to sit through something like that there'd be no telling what would happen. That was 25 years ago before people were so hyper-sensitive. A bunch of us did have to go to an art exhibit on campus while taking art appreciation. There was this one painting by an art major that was a "modern impressionist" depiction of a naked man with a leaf pinned over the privates. Next day the art teacher said the painting was meant to depict the turmoil a man has between being heterosexual and homosexual and the deciding factor was whether a person lifted the leaf to view underneath. Oh Hell yeah, it was on then. The entire week for the ball team was accusations and counter accusations of who on the team lifted the leaf.   Coach asked what all this crap was about lifting the leaf and we told him about it. Taking laps around the field he said that any of us ladies had lifted the leaf that was an extra 2 laps.  Coach would probably get fired today for saying something like that.

And that's part of the point I'm making. None of these kids thought about what moral or religious conflict this play caused them. They probably even talked about it a day or two before if they knew what the subject matter was. But I can assure you it didn't have anything to do with the internal conflicts they felt between right and wrong, good and evil, conservative vs. liberal.

From what I've heard through the grapevine, the guy that played the queer, was actually gay. He's the one making the big deal about it in the first place. He had some long Facebook rant about it and everything. I think unheard he contacted he media and reported it.

Getting this from an ole miss student, but he supposedly dates a black dude as well. The most controversial "couple" you can make up in mississippi. They play was about being persecuted. You can't expect to not have a comment when a guy actor plays a gay character in a play that's being made fun of. I've got a copy of the Facebook post. To me he sounds like an attention whorre inviting controversy. Kind of has the connotation that he may have wanted attention so he'd have something to crow about.
