In terms of energy efficiency, do they cost more or less to operate than traditional tank heaters?

Gas is supposed to be more energy efficient. My power bill went up after swapping out my electric tank unit for a tankless unit in our master bath.

Electricity is the worst form of making heat, based on btu output vs consumption. Of gasses, Propane is the best due to its high btu rating. This is why you change orifces when you convert NG to LP or vice versea. If your going to NG, your putting in a bigger orifice to allow more gas to flow. The downside to LP is that it is local to the home and stored in tanks. There is no underground utility piping for LP like NG. Hence NG is more widly used.
