In my experience, it takes 3-5 days for ducks (especially mallards) to get fed-up with the ice and move-on down the flyway. You'll get a few, but for the most part ducks won't migrate farther than they have to, to find open water, a food source, and no pressure.

While this weather event may be the best chance to concentrate what birds are already here (and typically push some of THOSE birds less-tolerant to colder weather 'OUT'), I wouldn't expect to see any appreciable influx of 'new' birds until early next week.........and I wouldn't expect them to be relatively 'easy', once they see pressure and it warms back up.

It's always exciting to finally get some 'cold' temperatures, but it's been warm a long time. This 'cold' is only going to produce part of the 'chill-down' effect on large water.

My strategy: I opted to stay in the warm bed this morning.

Happy Hunting!

Well I don't know as much about the cold weather effects on the migration as you do apparently, but I can tell you that we have 20x more birds now then last week so they came from somewhere!

'Wasn't responding directly to your comments, Clint.........rather to the misconception a lot of folks might have regarding.....
just 'cause it's colder than it's been in a while, you should expect to see more birds all of a sudden.
I'm sure it happens in some places. 'Glad you have ducks.

We didnt fire a shot in tunica till late sunday morning. Ice was 3 inches thick in the fields and took forever to try and break. Thawed some saturday night and sunday am.
But large bodies of water were slap full of birds way out in the middle!
May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face, and may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars.
Cheers, Georgie.

We were hunting an oxbow and it was indeed slap full.
