Thyroid problems can cause depression. Im living this one first hand. Without a normally functioning, Thyroid you can become depressed and don't even understand why. Things can be going well and you get very depressed. Once diagnosed and treated there is no problem.

Depression Question
Re: Depression Question
Very good point. We went through this with my wife's pituitary cyst and never had a clue. I knew she was changing but I thought a lot was due to just stress from job, kids family etc. some was but the changes to her hormones via the pituitary problems were exaggerating the problem. After her surgeries from last year I can tell a big difference. She still has some hormone issues but they are better and we know it will take some time to get back to normal.tica-tica wrote:Thyroid problems can cause depression. Im living this one first hand. I spoke with a friend about this and he informed that his sister went through a divorce due to depression/laziness. It came out to be a thyroid issue and she is doing great now. As I sat in the ER that night after that conversation I wondered how many people have given up on the spouses due to a medical reason like that. I bet the number would surprise folks.

Yep. Many think depression is caused by a problem with drugs/alcohol and I guess that is a cause in some cases but many times it is a problem with something in the endocrine system. It can be diagnosed with simple blood tests and usually a small amout of medication to fix the problem. With the Thyroid (mine was Hypothyroidism - An underactive thyroid) you get these symptoms: fatigue, exhaustion, feeling run down and sluggish, depression, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, unexplained or excessive weight gain, dry, coarse and/or itchy skin, dry, coarse and/or thinning hair, feeling cold, especially in the extremities, constipation, muscle cramps. And yes, it can effect the entire family because they think you are just a lazy, depressed, no good bum. I'm telling you, I would sleep 8 hrs and get up feeling like I just ran a 10k race and was very depressed. I felt completely exhaused all day long.
Get that friend a blood test and do some profiles on the endocrine system. It could save his life, marrage, etc...
I ain't a doctor but I play one on the Interwebs!
