Career Change Anyone?

Thank God for a free market and Bass Pro's right to market through out the USA! Competition is good and helps make this country great.
It won't matter much to me though. As long as Mean Mallard has the inventory and service to go with it I won't be traveling past them by driving to Bass Pro.
The Ace Hardware is very close to Wal-Mart where I live and I don't hesitate to use Ace over Wal-Mart due to their superior service. It will be the same with the Mean Mallard and its sure nice they will be opening in Ridgeland so we'll have one more reason that we don’t have to go into Jackson anymore.

Normally Anatidae & I are on the same page but maybe not on this one. The jobs link could help some members out, heck I've seen enough retail complaints on the board from members, maybe they could make a change for the better at BassPro?
I'm about as nostalgic as they come, I collect old guns, old ammo & boxes and occasionally an old car. I remember lot's of places I wish I could go to once again, BUT there's a new hardware store coming to town and it ain't "Pops", a new video store coming and it ain't "Larry's" and a new restaurant coming and it ain't "Moms". That's how it is. I've seen plenty of gun shops and other "local" retail outdoor stores close over the years and usually the reasons had nothing to do with the "big box" chains. It usually fails for these reasons, the management/owners were assholes or they failed to adapt and change to their market (that includes staying in a poor locations), or they kept M-F 9-5 bankers hours again-failed to adapt, had absurd customer un-friendly policies regarding exchanges-refunds-layaways, or had a filthy store (nostalgic in some ways but not good for business) or I could ramble on forever.
The point is, big box does have an impact but any savvy owner should be able to adapt and survive. Not everyone shops price or shops for camo underwear & camo beer huggies. Try to find an intelligent employee in a outdoor store that can explain the pluses/minuses of a 22-250 vs a .223. It would be hard to do. I don't know if anyone at the big box stores can? maybe so maybe not, but some customers will shop where they can find that kind of service.
Anywho, a Bass Pro (or whatever big ole' store) still employs local folks, paying local taxes, sending kids to local schools, and helping pave local roads. It ain't all bad, but long live the pot bellied stove. (In my mind anyway).

Good post boog... I myself wish the "Sports Center" in downtown Vicksburg was still open... owned by the Claus brothers. Those were 2 of the meanest 'ol sumbichs, but damn if they didn't know every little detail about every item in their store. I bought my first football equipment there (complete with brand-new, press-on lettered YMCA jersey), bought my first soccer cleats there and even bought my first big-barrel bat there. They had few guns behind the counter, but could get whatever you needed "in 2 days", as they always said. Those guys were some hunting fools, they sure knew their stuff.

True, I was at first worried that they would put smalled operations out of business. But places like Bills Archery won't go under b/c there is no way, even if I did buy a bow at Bass Pro (hehe, that rymed
), I wouldn't let them set it up. I don't think I could trust some kid that has to worry about getting people in and out to set up my equipment. My Uncle H & Aunt Juliet owned Sharps and I grew up going to the "Clause Bros." in V'burg as we knew it. I remember Uncle Howard turned me loose in that store one day and man I had fishin' line and decoys and everything else spread all over that place (I could do no wrong being Aunt Juliet was my GodMother).
The Clauses were just down right mean, if you went in there without your parents they were all over you. They let me and my Dad go upstairs and get all the Winchester and Peters wooden ammo boxes we wanted (got around 10 left today). They both sold top of the line stuff some of which I use today (Yentzen and Jones hat).

we all give flip about local stuff down here ant just stay up in your part of the state wif your 40 year old stuff and hunt your famous public land and let us buy wut we want and spend as much as we like on spinners for friends and call muffs for our calls! i swear aint nutten wrong wif bass pro i as for one is still gonna go to where ever i want to buy me sum stupid hunten stuff that i prolly dont need and ALREADY got plenty of. why dont you go and just drank you sum coffee and enjoy your 40 year old stuff and let us folks down here shop where we want too and play wif our spinners and throw out to many decoys........my GAWD.......GETTER-DONE!
