4. Robert Lane looked really good coming out of the backfield.

Being that I am out of the country and cannot get all of the rumors/info, can someone explain to me why a QB is playing FB? Not only a QB, but a WHITE QB!

Because this white boy is fast, a strong runner, has good hands for catching passes out of the backfield, and has a linebacker like disposition(he ain't scared to hit someone). His deficiency at QB is primarily his passing skills, which have kept him off the field. With a season ending injury to our starting fullback, and the realization that Lane may never develop into a top SEC QB, the mutual decision was made between the coaches and Lane to try him at some new positions to get him on the field to make plays. He will play FB, H-back (a slot back type position), and some TE, while still serving as one of our backup QBs. He is 6-3 and weighs 225 +. He is a redshirt Sophomore who has two more years of eligibility. He either needs to take the outright QB job this spring, or be permanently moved to another position to give him a chance to play and to possibly play on Sundays. Lane will not spend anymore time of any remaining seasons standing on the sidelines with a cap on and holding a clipboard. He is too good of an athlete to not be playing. He will be on the field somewhere.

Because he has a nasty little habit of throwing the ball to the other team.

Ok, but from what I heard in preseason, Spurlock and Lane were neck-and-neck. Coach O gives Spurlock the nod to be the starting QB and I am fine with that. The complaints are that Lane throws to the other team too much, but from the stats that I have seen of Spurlock, he is not any better. Why not let someone who will be there next year get some snaps rather than waste this year to a senior with a broken finger and can't hold on to the ball, rather than letting someone else get some playing time and get used to SEC football? Heck, it does not have to be Lane, but let one of those redshirt freshman QB's get some time behind the center. Last I saw, Coach O has two redshirt freshman on the bench and has offered 3 scholarships to incoming QB's. I know of one that we have a good chance of getting and he will be a JUCO transfer.

Spurlock and Lane are the only two quarterbacks in the stable that would survive behind the Reb offensive line. Spurlock is better than Lane. Coach O probably has two reasons for keeping Spurlock in. The first is that the defense keeps us in games and Spurlock gives us the best chance to win games this year. Second is that I bet next year's starter isn't on campus. So why put in a quarterback that's not the best we've got when he won't even be the starter next year?

Robert Lane:
Att. 22
Comp. 9
Yards 79
TD/INT 0/4

Michael Spurlock:
Att. 209
Comp. 111
Yards 1386
TD/INT 5/5

Offensive line has to improve as well as the receivers. QB has to be replaced, but we know that will happen because Spurlock will be gone. Running back is looking OK as well as the defense provided that they do not go backwards. Hopefully we can get a PK or the one that is hurt will get on track. If all of this can happen, next year I think we will be OK. This season is a wash, but I am just hoping that with our recruiting, which is ranked at #17 right now, we should be a much better team next year.

We will probably be favored in the MSUx and Arkie game. One upset out of the other two is a winning season.

I need to quit daydreaming
