Hey doc, you sound just like most of my family and friends. And I love them to death but they fall for anybody with an R by his or her name. They’re sheep; waiting on the powerful to tell them who to vote for in the next election. If you think highly of Bush, YOU NEED TO WAKE UP! He’s President because of his daddy, not because of his intellect.

I agree that, on the surface, this sounds like a bad deal. BUT (you knew that was coming), there is more to this sitiation.
First of all, the US is in charge of security at the ports. Coast Guard and Customs. Always has been and still will be.
The company that had been awarded the contract to perform certain operations services with respect to some areas of these ports, and had performed such services in the past, was a British company. That company was purchased by a company in UAE. It is my understanding that the same folks who have been performing these services would still be performing them, even though they have a new parent company.
The UAE has been a strong ally and friend of the US for quite some time, and has fully cooperated in the War on terror with the US. Yes, two of the hijackers of 9/11 were from this region, but those same hijackers were in our country for quite some time prior to carrying out this attack.
The US expects the UAE to honor its contracts with the US to sell us oil, and I believe that we have numerous other international business ties with this country and region. Are there Al Queida sympathizers in the UAE? Yes. But, there are such sympathizers in our own country, right now, as we speak. 3 of them in Ohio were recently arrested by the US authorities.
I am still not certain where I ultimately stand on this issue. I have mixed feelings about it. And, I think we all need to inform ourselves of all the facts before rushing to any judgments about it. It looks like Congress is going to delay enactment of the new contract, to allow a chance for further review of the matter. I think that is a wise move. If the US does decide to proceed with the contract with the now UAE owned company that is still located in Britain, then the administration needs to address the US public and explain the decision and why we should not worry and are still in good hands.
I would like to know what our alternatives are with respect to other contractors. Are they better or worse? Does this company have unique abilities and expertise in the industry that other companies do not offer? And if we do not go with the now UAE company, will we owe them damages for breach of contract? Will we really be any safer with another company? Have there been any previous incidences of security breaches with this company in the past? What assurances would the US have with respect to employee screening? Would the US be allowed to have input into or control the employee screening? I don't have these answers, and I doubt that any of you do either.
There is no need for a lynch mob at this time.
