you are correct, the 357 sig is a necked down 40 S&W case to take a 9mm (.355) dia bullet. it is a decent round, but sig answered a question that nobody asked. most people, including myself, aren't not totally sold on the bottleneck pistol round. you to get some advantage in speed - 124 gr 9mm crusing @ 1200 fps, 357 crusing @ 1400 fps. However, you are sacrificing bullet weight to get the additional speed. most folks choose the 40 over the 9mm for the increased performance in a little heavier bullet (124 gr 9mm vs 155/165 in 40 S&W). there are only a few listings for this round. Federal only loads it in a 125 gr HP, not even the Hydra shock, & remington dropped the load recently. What i don't understand is companies the load both offerings, don't put a decent load together. Federal for example doesn't offer it in the Hydra shock bullet or Remington in the Golden Sabre. I thought that since the FBI & US Air Marshalls went to the chambering in a 229, the choices would open up. hasn't happened. that's why i sold the 357 barrel i had for my Sig. I suspect that this cartiage will fall into a cult following, like the 10mm, despite the federal contract. for the record, the FBI still uses the 10mm, and it hasn't lead to a wider offering of factory ammo. that's fine by me, that just means that there's more for me!!
