They looked like mottled ducks. We kill them in South Alabama pretty frequently but never heard of anyone killing them in Mississippi.
Mottled ducks look similar to a hen mallard but with more pronounced coloration. They have a blue speculum like a mallard.

we killed a bunch of gadwalls a couple weeks ago. Did not even see a mallard but one of the "gadwalls" we killed looked just like a small hen mallard. I have been duck hunting for 30 years and I would assume it had to be a small hen mallard but only one in with a thousand gadwalls.........I think it might be a mallard/gadwall hybrid.

One question Rusty. How long have you been duck hunting?
Is this your first year? Just wondering?

They have to be really young because they are really small... I'm honestly thinking a mottled ducks... VERY similar to both gadwall and mallard hens... Too close of a call for me. They just seem to small for a mallard. Who knows? All I'm sure of is that mallards are the most likely to cross breed than any other duck... any other bird for that matter. They are EXTREMELY aggressive breeders.

I don't remember not hunting. I have duck hunted with my dad since I was small enough that he carried me through the water to a stump. Like I said I thought I was wrong. Looked to small to be a mallard to me but hey what do I know I am a topwater.
Wood Duck next to duck in question.

I don't know I guess I could dive under water and start pulling them down by their feet.

That would be a small hen mallard and large woodie. I've killed ALOT of woodies in my life and I've seen some mighty large drake woodies!! That's a hen mallard if I've ever seen one!!!!
