Do people refer to "black mallards" as black ducks or mottled ducks? I'd always thought that black mallard=blackducks

It depends on where you are. Everywhere but the gulf coast, black mallard=black duck. Down here, most of the old timers call mottled ducks "black mallards." The REAL old timers will call wood ducks "french mallards" and they call mottled ducks "marsh mallards".

The colors on a wing of a black duck look like a silvery green color to me now thats just what they look like to ME does anyone else see this.

Where I used to hunt in St. Charles Parish, La., I have heard them called Summer Mallards, French hens, and Black ducks!

Summer duck or summer mallard mostly refers to mottled ducks because of their 365day occupation of the marsh or am I wrong?

Well yes! You see them "in the summer" when there are no other ducks around the marsh!

You will see Greenheads in the Pascagoula marsh all year, too. Not a lot, but enough to go "Hey boy: You lost or something?"

Well, according to my newest issue of Louisiana Sportsman magazine, a mottled duck is the only duck native to Louisiana and does not migrate. It is a cousin of the mallard but shows the characteristics of a black duck { VERY WARY AND CALL SHY]. The mottled duck is a tad lighter than the black mallard and the blue wing patch is also a softer hue. It also says they usually stick close to the coastal marshes, so my chances of killing one are slim to none.

A Mottled is going to be a little lighter than than a Black, and the Mottled Hen has a light green bill. Got a nice looking one mounted that was shot in Colorado County Tex. My relatives in La. use the term 'french hen', the old-timers in Texas call 'em "Mexican Mallards"! I saw that same article in La. Sportsman and was wondering, I'm pretty sure they have some resident woodies there. That is where i learned to hunt as a kid.

Yes, i am from Dayton about halfway between Beaumont and Houston. I have never actually been thru Palistine, but have been in most of the towns near there. It is maybe a 2 1/2 hour drive from me.I have hunted in some of the Neches river botoms near Palestine. Ask your wife if she knows where Ratcliff is! Some decent public hunting near there.

aka summer french, black mallard, summer mallard, marsh mallard, blacks, I am sure I am forgetting a few of the names I'll keep thinking.
