I handpainted some old standard G&H hen mallards to look like Gadwalls.
I painted a large exaggerated white wing patch on them. It really shows up from a distance. So far all gadwalls and woodies that have come in sucked up to these dekes

I hunt w/ litlhitch- and i agree on the bluebills-here is my theory. When you are out riding on the water when you see someone elses spread what color is must noticeable-you may think it is white, but it is actually just a dark color. As you get closer you can see the colors of the dekes.
I think that darker colors are easier for birds to see from great distances.

Hambone, this must be why your decoys work so well.. It's probably also the reason why you are not seeing as much this year, because you went and bought all those new decoys.

You may be better off if you switch back to those partially melted solid black dekes that are hanging up on the side of the King Beak Lodge.

I always throw in a few teal on the edge of the spread. The mojo used to work, but I didn't even use it last year because it would flare ducks. If you do use one get a remote and cut it off when the ducks get close. A crane seems to work pretty well too. just put it to the side on the edge of the water.Good luck.

Takeum..I use Mallards (about 3.5 dozen or so) mixed w/ Sprig (about 2.5 dzn) and Woody dekes (about a dzn) ..I also have 2 Teal and a gadwall deke that tends to help mix things up...If ya look in the DU Marsh watch..you'll see al kinds of ducks mixed together..It's worked for me! Good Luck
