i killed a duck very similar to that opening morning. Its body looked a little more like a hen though, and his head was greener. The body was just brown. No colors toward the tail like that.

I am a topwater, so I ate him

Any time you kill a "crossbreeded" it counts as the lessor value as far as the ducks go. You must be able to determine this though! That duck would have counted as a balpate to me

Looks like a drake mallard that hasn't fully molted in breeding plumage. You know they look like hens all summer long. But the dark breast has me wondering.

I say his momma was confused and hanging around the projects, therefore it is an accident and the duck was also confused, he wanted to die

Look at his feet and bill wrong colors for a black.
Not that rare really. I've got two mounted! Have seen several
more in the last 45 years or so. Also have 2 black mallard/wegion
cross breeds. Same head on a black body
na I don't see that

its a blawidgelard. And if you listen closely, after every quack, there will be a whistle. It't sounds like a mallard with a bad lisssssssssp.

I agree. Which picture do you see the feet in? What color bill do you think a black duck has? Name one feature on that bird that looks like a widgeon. :?:

First guess would be a drake that has some molting issues. Possibly a hybrid.

When in doubt go with what wingman says.

The coloration on the head with the green stripe looks like a wideon..

Thats what a mallard drakes head looks like during the warm months. That duck does not a have any Widgeon in him. The belly is the only thing in question to me.

I think it is a cross between a kentucky blue grass and a cannabis weed.Play 18 on it and then get blitzed in the afternoon. In all seriousness I think it is what we call an eclipse mallard (not in full plumage). Shot a few down on the coast.
