mud motors

Gator-Tail, use it in the LA Marsh and it is a machine. I run a 35 hp on a Gator-Tail 17x54 boat. With two men and gear, I do about 25 mph. Best investment in a boat or hunting gear I ever made.

I run a GD longatial and love it, wouldnt trade it for any of the surface drives for where I hunt. Greenheadgrimreaper has a scavenger longtail and its nice also, has alot of power and tourqe

I run a mudbuddy longtail on a 14ft skiff, not fast but lots of torque and very reliable, I can't fly through the mud but its steady

What can you realisticly expect as far as shallow water depth wise?

depends on what kind of bottom it is. in really soft cake batter mud you can run in pretty much 0 water. but harder bottoms require more water over it to get going. watch this video and you can see what can be done with these motors http://media.putfile.com/Pro-Drive-Video

I have thought about looking at one also.I have a 16' 54" bottom f &f mod vee.how well would it work on my boat? seems like most of the videos show the boats hauling ass across open water.how well do they work when u are just putting along thru low water in timber??

in my experience you can go shallow...but how shallow depends at least a little bit on the hull design (a flat bottom boat will run over the mud more than a mod v. will because it has more lift), in addition to the type of bottom as already discussed (sand is terrible on them, and harpack isn't too much fun)....

a boat like a gator-trax, go-devil, pro-drive or Southern Duck boat will perform better than a mod v. boat, but there is nothing wrong with putting them on a mod v. if you aren't expecting to push the motors to the limit.... in the stumpy stuff and in the woods the motors do fine, they (especially the longtails) are not easy to steer and take some effort to maneuver but some stick time usually solves that).... when you hit a stump with a large longtail motor it will jar the pizz out of you, if you hit it hard it might do a number on your foot....

I would hate to drive a 31 hp longtail. Just makes my shoulder hurt thinkin' about it.

I have a 14X36 that im looking to get a mudmotor for...I was either looking at the beavertail 13 (about 99% sure thats what im going to wind up with) or the mudbuddy 12...both of these are longtails, I would really like a surface drive but cant find one small enough in the right hp

I would say the mudbuddy longtail, however I am leary of them because of their customer service that my buddy experienced with the company

....(as a side note, not everyone at the company is like that, I have been receiving info from a nice dealer)

Also calling on the phone the beavertail staff is easier to reach and seems more knowledgeable about their products...this only comes from me shopping around.

Can anybody offer any suggestoins/experiences.

It's not too bad but you definite can't manhandle it. You just kind of have to let it do its thing. Drives easy on plane.

you think a 31 would be bad you should see one of the predators that i believe beavertail built a while back. it was a longtail with a harley davidson engine on it.

you should rephrase that...."you" can't manhandle the 31 HP :wink:

as for suggestions greenhead 329...read Jeff's post above.... I have had nothing but good experiences with GD though....

I have a 13 scavenger on my boat(1436) and after the motor got loosened up I had to change belts. Once I did that it will haul booty. It has the 2:1 gear reduction like the MB 12 hp. I don't think MB has the longtail hyperdrive in production right now. The handle on scavengers looks weird but I can drive it just as good if not better than my outboard in flooded timber and cypress breaks while on plane.
