How much do i have to pay to get on that hunt big daddy?
Chopper you have a open invite when ever you want to come. Sounds crazy but after you kill a bunch and everybody has a pair to mount, I feel kinda of weird breasting them out. We did the same thing last year.
Chopper's going to need a guide, and I happen to have a call made specially for black ducks.

Lots of people kill mottle ducks and say they are blacks. So discounting those mottles from the count of blacks then it is really rare.

No black ducks for our club this year. Last year we got a couple. The year before that we shot over 10 I think. Bottom line, not that common.

Not that common as said above. We invited some guys down from VA to hunt with us this year and I was talking to one of them about his bands on his lanyard. He showed me 2 that came off a banded black and I asked if he mounted it and he said "nope, I ate him". That's crazy sh** if you ask me. I've never killed on by the way.

My brother killed mottlet duck a few seasons ago. looked exactly like a black yet where his wings colors are blue my brothers was a dark shade of green. yep he rung it's neck not thinking. Then the dog decided she had waited long enough for breakfast. No mount.
Anyway rare indeed.

Rare in the Delta, a little more numerous the further east you travel!!!

We get em over in the extreme NE part of the state, and have consistently killed a few every year for the past 8 or so seasons. However, this year I didn't see as many as I have in years past...

Mottled Ducks are extremely rare north of coast. Much rarer than black ducks.

those mottles have to get to the coast some kinda way. Blacks just rarely come down this flyaway. Alot of the pictures on this site have been pictures of mottles. Just didn't feel like getting into an argument.

The truth is that what most people kill in this area that are thought to be black ducks, are actually Black duck/ Mallard cross'. When this occurs, the duck will get the white on the edges of the speculum, similar to Mottled ducks. Mottled ducks also aren't nearly as dark as black or a mallard/black hybrid. But the easiest way to tell is in the speculum. Purple or blue=black, where as a greenish tint will usually indicate that it is a mottled.
