Just round up all pit bulls, but a bullet in them and be done with it.

Amen. Also round up all the unfit parents and put a bullet in them.

There is an easy fix to this.. Make a law that states all dogs have to adequatly contained by a fence....
Kid climbs into a fenced yard and gets killed.. Parents/kids responsible...
Dog gets out and kills someone.. Owner's responsible..
Any dog found wandering the area or not fence should be reported and picked up by the pound. Kept for 2 weeks.. Then put down if the owner does not report the dog missing..
If this dog was in a fenced yard.. The child would more than likely not have gotten in.

its a bad situation but its the parents fault for letting the 3 year old wonder aimlessly... i think the dog should be put down and thats it. of course i think all pits should be so...

i think the dog was in an unfenced yard ona long chain. Not in a pen or fenced yard. I believe the dog should be put down because he was shot and is in a pen not moving due to the wound. He should be taken care of or put down.

My wife and her ex-husband had a pit that was raised on a bottle stayed inside. about4 months ago the x called to tell us to let my 3 yr old step son know his "5 yr old dog had gotten killed" by a bullet after it attacked the x. He said he put the dog in a work van and intended having it checked by a vet the next day, but as soon as he walked away from the van the pit jumped through the side glass and came at him again. So he put him down.
Now we have a great dane, which is a house dog. She will let any kid come in the yard and play, but about two weeks ago Brent was outside playing while my wife was picking up the yard. A meter reader started to walk through the yard in the direction of Brent and she broke a steel cable to get between him and Brent, she didn't attack, just got between them barking and snarling at the guy. He stopped, turned and walked away. Jasmine just went to Brent and started smelling and licking on him.
Sorry to hear young life was lost, but the dog should have been shot, DHS should take any other kids in the house hold, and put mother in jail. The proper training for guard dogs should to hold the threat at bay (without injury) until the owner comes to neutralize it(thief kill/small kid release and reprimand the dog for not knowing a small kid isn't a threat). Just my 2 pennies

i have had several rottweilers and some were more protective than others but a dog like any protects his space. i have had labs that wouldnt hurt a flea but u come up to the truck and he didnt know u he would try to eat u up. my last rott weighed 120 plus and was around my son from birth . will was the only one who could pet the dog while he ate. i have a 4yr old son and i never for 2 seconds let him out of my site cause anything can happen as in this case. i would say that a parent that wont keep up with the kids needs to be put down. pit bulls can be viscous but i have seen lap dogs that would tear your ankle up if you walked in the house with them too. it is just a case of dog being protective and ignorant parent. bad case but not all the dogs fault. we would be cheering if it was someones poor grandmother at home alone that had the bulldog and dog killed an intruder that could have done harm to her

Wow,lot of opinions on this one! I have been watching this one real close in the media, lots of dynamics to it.
First, I agree with everybody, no 3 year old should have been left unattended. However, my three year old plays out in the yard with my 6 year old all the time. Even though we try to keep a close eye on both of them, I can see how they could slip away. Not defendng the mother cause I don't know the whole story as I don't think anyone else on here does. But I can see how it could happen.
As for pit bulls, I agree that more and more of them are becoming vicious but I have to stand by my view that it is enviroment induced. I grew up with two, one just a typical pit, the other born from two fighting dogs (that's another story). Neither one of them would hurt you. As a kid growing up in the country a lot of times they were the only thing I had to wrestle with and I promise you I got rough with them. Never once did they snap at me out of anger. As for guard dogs, they would let someone know they weren't welcome but as far as attacking someone, they never did.

All parties were to blame starting with the childs parent and the dog and dog owner next door.

no but at the very least the dog needs to be put down...if not it will always pose a threat or risk
plus there is no way I could continue to own or care forthe dog knowing what had transpired

Would everybody be up in arms if it had been a lab that attacked the child? I don't think so. My lab is just as gentle as can be, but not even my girls friends dad can walk in the house if I'm not there. Taylor is very protective of her (especially around men).
Blame the parents all the way.
