Back in the glory days of lead shot I averaged about one Mallard per 50 killed, now it's more like 1 in 150 to 175. A lot depends on where you hunt too and many resident geese are banded and I've hunted some areas where it was rare to kill one that wasn't banded. Luck pays a big part in killing a banded bird quite obviously, I've been very lucky. But, I know some friends that have hunted almost as long as I have and killed almost as many and they have taken few banded birds. Don't know what to make of that. I've also seen quite a few bands on birds before I shot them and of course neck collars make a great target!

i've said it before, this man could kill a banded duck headed to the grocery store to get a loaf of bread.

I have started really trying to look for bands on the ducks when they are working. I have managed to see one once but was unlucky in getting a shot on it. I guess I could have told the rest of the party that she was banded but then again every one would have been shooting at her and then there would have been an argument over who thought they shot my banded duck...
Funny, It was a hen and she held back from the pack as they worked their way in. I wonder if them getting caught and banded makes them a little more skiddish?????

I've got 29 bands but only one of them I knew was banded before I pulled the trigger. I bunch of times we have lacked a duck or two finishing out the limit and knowing it wasn't going to problem limiting out decided to look for banded ducks. Never have I been able to pull that one off. Even on a blue bird day with the sun at your back, it's still tough to pick out banded birds.

During the 1996-97 season, I spotted a band on a greenhead fluttering over the decoys and called it before I shot....all on video. A little bragging, but a true story nevertheless.

As far as seeing bands before I shot em Ive seen three. One would have gotten away for sure if I had not known it first.

The place I hunt is a 3000 acre rice farm, it has been hunted for roughly 50 years I am the first and only person to kill a band off of it a Pintail hen bout 5 years ago.
