Bill Collector is right about picking an area close to your work. But just don't ask him about lunch spots!

Yes, Zachary has the top rated public schools these days.
Public schools in Ascension Parish are also pretty good (Prairieville, Dutchtown). Central also seems to be a growing area with good schools. The only decent schools, it seems, in the city are private.
I wouldnt send my kids to central schools. Thats almost a trap asking your kids to be on some kind of drugs.

I am a north mississippi boy that lived in BR for a little over three years and I have to say I loved the place (still love to go back). As has been stated, the best public schools are in Zachary, which is a great town in and of itself, very small town feel. I have a friend that lives there and works in BR. He loves it. Zachary is also close to Woodville and that area of Mississippi which has some pretty good hunting, for brown haired and feathered game.
Prairieville is east of BR and likewise is a good place to live. However, if you want small town life, access to the city, good churches, etc., then in my opinion Zachary is the place to go. If I were to move back, it would be the first place I look for houses unless my employer was located on the east side of BR.
Baton Rouge is a big town, much bigger than most realize in the metro-area. Around 1,000,000 people use the city on any given day since Katrina. However, it is the biggest "small town" you will ever see. It still has a small-town, SEC feel to it. When LSU sports are good, the town has a great feel. You cannot beat the atmosphere of a college town anyway.
There are many good places to eat (almost too many), many good places to go to the movies, a wonderful park system (rated among the highest in the country year in and out), many great gold courses and many great people. People in that part of Louisiana seem to enjoy life more than say Jackson. They appreciate life and try to live it to the fullest.
The only real drawback if you live in Baton Rouge and are not Catholic, you may have trouble finding a strong church. Zachary does have several strong churches.

St. Francesville would be a place to look at as well. Not to mention some jam up hunting in the area..
