I'm not sure why everyone thinks it would ruin a pot? It's just deer meat? You can try all the "ant", "leaving it in water", or "leaving it in the woods" methods yuo want but there are really only two viable options that will give you a good product that will look good and last. Either boil it or find someone with beetles.
We have one guy on here that boils them for people, all you have to to is use the search function to find him. If you want to do it yourself, it's not that hard.
I'm not knocking any of the other methods but they are truelly half shod at best. I just don't want you to mess up your head to the point that you can't display it.

clarification: if you ever want to use the pot to cook food with again, don't boil a deer head in it...if it will only used for things of this nature, boil away.
...then again, the ones we've boiled have been in a tree for while (just boiling remaining meat/tissue off), sooooo they are rank to begin with. the fresh one we boiled wasn't too bad until the brain matter started boiling out, still a funky smell.

If you don't want to deal with the mess of skull mounting, you can do just a horn mount.

or you can buy all the Dermestid Beetles you want online. They sell different kinds of kits with different number of beetles. Just make sure that you get a mixture of adult and young beetles. Some places will sell only young beetles and you won't get reproduction until they get older.

the hair bleaching stuff from a beauty supply works great. It is a cream and it has the hydrogen peroxide strength that you need to get the bleaching done. Cover the skull (USE GLOVES!!!) and wrap it in roll gauze for 24 hrs. Then spay with urethane.

I have used it twice. It is like a #40. (that does not mean 40% hydrogen peroxide)
It works great, but WEAR THE GLOVES

i've boiled out several( do it outside), and its not too bad if you do it fresh, just be sure to scrape the tissue while its still wet, and get ya a coat hanger and pull the brains out when they get soft. i always bleached mine too, hydrogen peroxide and regular bleach does a great job, a bottle of peroxide to a gallon of bleach. this needs to be done outside and away from open flame, and do not leave it in for more than 30 min.also be sure you have the horns wrapped well so as not to get the horns wet or it will take the color off the horns.

just how i do it, don't make it right

I do not recommend bleach at all. It will eventually turn yellow. You need to degrease it after you boil, soak it in a pond, put it in an ant hill, etc. That will help turn the skull brilliant white. There are a bunch of recipes on the internet. My buddy has started doing it following a recipe he found online and they look professionally done.
